Strange problem with UAC makes my games freeze

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

Lately ive been having this strange issue that almost all of my games (Dark souls, crysis 2,kingdoms of amaleur.fable III,fallout 3 goty) totally locks up the screen while music is still playing ??

in fullscreen mode i cant use any of my keyboard commands to access windows and a hard-reset is my only choice, then i tried running the games in windowed mode so i could access task manager and

maybe get a hint of what was going on.

they all have in common that they freeze after the loading screen is done or within 1 minute in-game, First i thought it had something to do with my graphic card or maybe my harddrive but then

remembered that Skyrim and Oblivion (my only 2 working games) didnt have this issue.

2 weeks troubleshooting and unable to find anything on the net that looked similar to this,But then suddenly by coincidence i toogled UAC virtualization on in task manager while game was running and

the problem was gone  and happily went to bed.

next day dark souls frooze again (always during the first boss battle), But UAC virtualization was suddenly greyed out, then i turned UAC of in control settings but no luck either,Just until i turned administrator settings off in the dark souls exe file AND IT WORKED AGAIN???? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON ???

This is really puzzling me,but i managed by a bit of research that it has something to do with where the game writes its data to,and sometimes games will write it to wrong location and i guess thats

why its freezing or what ??

Ive installed all my games outside the C:directory to avoid UAC and automatic updates,i already turned UAC off before all this happened whick makes it no less weird  and im running windows 7 ultimate64bit.

I could really use some help to restore my games to work as they should,So if any of you has some expertise with this i would really appreciate it

Game freeze in Fallout 3 is usually the result of the multi-core bug. See the post by Prensa here: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/408910-freeze/

It can also be caused by certain codecs. See these posts by CCNA: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1463017-fallout-3-crashing-on-windows-7-resolved-codecs/

As Prensa says, "Hope this helps>"

I dont think you quite understood what i meant.

I know all about fallout 3 bugs and its defenitely not caused by the multicore bug,It freezes when you shoot, pick locks, open doors and its EVERYTIME (had to download a save just to get out of the bunker)

Dark souls freezes everytime the first boss tries to hit you EVERYTIME,fable III when you pick clothes EVERYTIME,

They do it on all settings + - anti aliasing even in the smallest windowed mode. THIS IS NOT A GRAPHICAL OR CPU BUG i tried every freaking troubleshooting from A-Z the last 2 weeks before i found out that it had something

to do with UAC I need someone to tell me how to set the registry right, cause obviously they are being read wrong.

do you mod fallout 3? do you use boss for fallout 3? i know this game can easily be completely screwed by a bad mod load order

have you ever installed any extra codec packs?

have you got a recent system restore point cant hurt

try the resource manager from task manger go to perfomance tab and its down the bottom look for frequent spikes

do you have the option to do a full re-install (of windows) i pretty much do this on any situation that i have no idea what is causing it

just some ideas

try setting your sound card to a lower setting best to reset to default, sounds weird but it has helped me a few times

in task manager go to processes tab - view (top bar) columns and select pf delta, I/O read bytes,I/O write bytes and see what happens during a normal load then put one of the games that have a problem in windowed mode with the task manager in view on the other side of the screen and see if there are any massive increases in any of the 3 new columns(sort but the new columns) if there is find out the process name AND GOOGLE IT FIRST honestly you can cause more problems buy just blindly ending processes

if none of that works you may need to do a full windows re install i know it is a long annoying task but it will give you a clean slate and then you know if it is still not working properly then my best guess would be hardware issues

good luck

Sorry guys i feel so stupid :P

the only thing i hadnt checked was my xbox 360 controller.

one day i accedentily fell over the wire and ripped it out of the port, And WHAT ?? the game came back from its freezing state and suddenly all my games worked again

Turns out that the ds3 motionjoy tool had installed a driver that conflicted with my original controller. Ha Ha only used several months to solve this issue Thanks to my clumsiness ;D
