Game Freezing Up; Strange Papyrus Log

Recommended Posts

Hello there folks. I come to you with an interesting issue I am facing. For some time now I have been suffering from random CTDs which I may have resolved with a bugfix I found relating to the lvlpredatorscript.psc error. Along with this issue I have on many occassions encountered random freezes which often result in me having to force the program closed through task manager. Upon checking my latest papyrus log directly after the latest freeze I didn't see any particular script that stood out like the lvlpredatorscript.psc one but I did see an awful lot of spam in my log.

Here's my papyrus log (Pastebin link):

http://pastebin.com/ZMX2QMJ2

I'm getting a lot of spam with "RCO: RegisterForSingleUpdate - OnUpdate 2" but not sure what it's trying to update. Has anyone encountered this? I am running quite a few mods but have updated and cleaned them with TES5Edit as well as set up a bashed patch. I also use BOSS to keep my load order as good as it can be.

Here's my mod list (mods with =1 are active while mods with =0 are disabled) UPDATED 06/21/2013:

ReneersCrimeOverhaul.esp <-- just a guess

I'm guessing that those RCO statements are from that mod. Probably a trace statement used in debugging that did not get commented out. Most likely harmless in and of itself but couple that with other script heavy mods and you'll increase your chances of lag, lockups & crashes.

Alright that makes sense. I am almost certain a few of my mods are likely script heavy. I'd really hate to have to remove any of them though. I was hoping someone could also look at my load order and see anything that might set off any alarms as being known to cause crashes or known to conflict or anything like that as well.

There have been a few times, usually when the game has decided to freeze that I've checked it's usage and it's been up to as much as 3GB memory. I've heard heavily scripted mods can cause this and it's likely why I'm freezing up. Thing is, I've got 16GB of RAM, 3GB memory usage shouldn't really be an issue should it?

Figured I'd post again in my thread since I am still having the problems. Since I posted the thread I have uninstalled/reinstalled all of my mods, cleaned them with TES5Edit (latest), set up a bashed patch, and downloaded the latest drivers for my GPU.

After about an hour and 45 minutes of relatively problem-free gaming I had an actual, honest to goodness appcrash with the typical "Skyrim.exe has stopped working" nonsense. I figured it was inevitable with the amount of mods I have going. I believe my active .esm/esp list is around 90 strong so that's going to increase typical random CTDs. I waited a bit and then JUST started up the game again. I lasted about 10 minutes in the game before the game just instantly closed, no error this time. Both crashes occurred just outside the entrance to Riverwood coming up from the river.

I checked my latest papyrus log and the only thing I see within seconds of the game crashing is the following:

My mod list has been updated in the OP to reflect changes I've made to my mods/load order since last time.

Just for fun (as a test), try a brand new game without that RCO mod installed. See if the game becomes playable and stable for longer periods of time.

As far as reaching around 3GB and then crashing, as I understand it the game is a 32 bit application and has an internal limit on the amount of ram that can be used. Despite having more system ram, the game will still crash when this limit is reached. Reducing eye candy (hi-res textures & hi-poly meshes) can help. Reducing mods that utilize lots of scripts especially constant polling update cycles can help as well.

Well I've removed RCO just as a test and I figure I don't really need it anyways. It's spamming up my papyrus logs and now throwing out errors so meh. I can live without it. I've also disabled UFO as someone made a suggestion on /tesg/ that I do that. As for hi-res textures all I'm using is the SkyrimHD stuff and a couple of other things that change rocks, snow, smoke and embers. I also use SMIM which you likely saw in my mod list. Nothing much else except for aMidianborn weapons/armor texture overhauls.

I was thinking of downgrading my SkyrimHD stuff from 4096 to 2048 just to reduce the stress on the game. I may do that later.

Bah... I'm so frustrated with this. I downgraded SkyrimHD to Lite version (2048), downgraded some other HD textures to 2048, removed UFO, removed RCO, re-tweaked my .ini with only tested and true values. Tried running with GameBooster and ATTK. Still crashing, now very much randomly. No error. Just closes out. I can't read Papyrus logs for crap so I don't really see what's causing my issues. The logs seem random. Sometimes it's this or that. I am at a complete and total loss.

Well the papyrus log isn't a crash log. It lists warnings and errors that it encounters as well as purposefully placed information. While it may help you to find something that is having problems in your particular setup, it alone isn't going to tell you what is causing your game to crash.

I had a seemingly random crash in my game. It would happen at various points in time and in various locations. The log was not helpful at all. There was literally nothing to indicate a problem. I had to pay attention to the small details as to the source of the crash. I was crashing whenever the armor was removed from a female NPC and/or my own character. I was using UNP. It has around 12k polygons versus the stock mesh having near 3k. I was in essence filling up my in game ram usage at least 4 times faster than I otherwise could have. When it filled up, the game crashed. Once I stopped removing armor from the dead female bandits, my in game session time increased dramatically. I would still crash on character transformation (werewolf & vampire lord), but by then I knew what the source was and made sure I had a save made prior to any transformation.

That said, all those modified meshes and increased texture resolutions add up over time. Depending upon where you go and what gets loaded determines how soon the crash will be.

The script side is probably less of a problem. Each mod should function fine and be relatively problem free on their own. Where issues creep up is when you have multiple mods with scripts running. Depending upon how much script stuff is going on you can end up with scripts "fighting" for processing threads. That is when slow downs and lag start happening.

Combine both the high-res, high poly stuff and scripts competing for processing time and your game becomes a CTD time bomb.

All that to say, if you want to avoid crashing caused by filling up your in game ram... use less mods in your game.

There are other valid reasons for the game to crash, but the biggest (in my opinion) is the simple filling up of the in game ram limits.

Makes perfect sense but I mean, I really can't enjoy Skyrim nearly as much without most of my mods. Currently it takes on average about an hour to two hours for my game to crash from being overloaded. It's not really happening when I do specific things. It just occurs randomly. Sometimes I'm running out in the wild. Sometimes I'm sneaking through a dungeon. Sometimes I get an interior load crash, sometimes exterior. I've crashed randomly from doing random things whenever and wherever. There doesn't seem to be any logical pattern. It just happens. Like a ticking timebomb as you say...

If it crashes randomly for no noticeable reason every one to two hours AND you have nothing left you are willing to remove from the game...

Suggestions:

-- Make manual saves often and/or try one of the automatic manual save mods. These saves will be backups in case you do crash.

-- Exit the game and restart after 1.5 hours if you have not crashed.

-- Whenever not in game run a third party tool that is designed to free up ram of unnecessary data. I use Smart Ram which is part of Advanced System Care from IObit

-- Turn off or disable anything not needed to run.

-- Always reboot before starting your gaming session. No need to have any other data potentially hoarding system resources and reducing the amount offered to the game.

-- Check out bben46's Basic Mod Troubleshooting Guide It isn't Skyrim specific or even Nexus specific but may have some useful information nonetheless.

Good luck.
