Tidus44
wanweird; an unhappy fate, misfortune. Sort of wonder about the technology or whatever involved and what/why certain things occur. I have two homes, one in the city (a condo actually) and one in a quite remote, rural area. I also live in a country that tends to have some rather wide temperature ranges and weather extremes. In all the years I have lived here I can recall only one time where I lost power for more than a day because of inclement weather; a gust front and then a tornado ran through and took out about 5 km of the transmission grid both north and south of the house and isolated the area. And then it was less than 2 days before power was restored. I have been isolated from time to time (once for 6 days) due to snow fall or flooding, but power failure has been very few and then only short periods; usually a few hours at most. With the extreme weather that occurs here on a regular basis and in every season year after year - makes me wonder what is done differently here that isn't done elsewhere that results in the extended periods of no power that seem to happen in other locations? One would think that electrical transmission systems are constructed pretty similarly across North America. I do know that where I live a fairly disastrous power failure in the 1970's led to much of service delivery being placed underground rather than on overhead lines. Its actually quite rare to see overhead power lines here - so maybe that's the difference? Glad to see ya back and OK.

Aurielius
Trepidation - an anxious anticipation or my current attitude towards the upcoming snow/ice storm due tonight. Having zero faith in my state's ability to cope. it's not like we live in the south where being unprepared would be excusable. Dear God if a poor state such as Vermont can handle these type of events, it makes you wonder what the clowns in Harrisburg are doing with my taxes, what is worse is that my county is the most wealthy one of the entire state. Tidus44
hiemal; occurring in or pertaining to winter. There is something just exceedingly weird running to an emergency call hot (lights and siren) but moving only 10kph or slower. The day started nice and sunny so the snow that started about 9am was melting on the roads. By 1:30pm, 5-6 cm snow had fallen and the wind was hitting 60 kph. Now, there is about 10 cm of snow fallen, the wind is 60-70 kph and gusting to 90 kph. The last call (vehicle collision on the highway) was like driving inside a milk bottle. I'm sure I lost sight of the windshield wipers at times. Supposed to die out by 3am tomorrow morning. My relief is in early, so Imma headin out and takin my chances. I figure the 12 minute drive (on a normal day) will probably take an hour or better today. Tidus44
hibernaculum: a protective case or covering, especially for winter. I wonder what the opposite of a snowbird is? The blizzard on Wednesday dropped 20 cm of snow. But, it dropped more than double that north of me. Off for 10 days snowmobiling, skiing and whatever deep soft snow will inspire me to do. Aurielius
Contrarian- To intentionally go against the flow. If you find a Floridian up there now he would definitely qualify. True the weather is providing excellent skiing weather, that is if you can get to the slopes. We had a major pile up (100 more or less) on the main interstate 2 miles from the house. Pa drivers really can't cope with inclement weather when on the road. http://news.yahoo.com/video/major-pileup-pennsylvania-turnpike-143714689.html?.tsrc=metropcs
Tidus44
Back from playing in the snow. Second night at the cabin the water line froze (it went to -50C over night) so I had to get water from the hotel and take it to the cabin or melt snow on the wood stove. So, after a week of that, coming home and opening a tap and flushing a toilet is sort of automagical (automatic in a way that seems ingenious or inexplicable; as if by magic.)
