VOCAB wars

After the military and years in SAR, the idea of parachuting, scuba diving, mountain climbing, snow shoeing and even skiing (down hill or cross country) sort of trigger my ergophobia (the fear of work) as doing them as a job tends to have me to see them as not being much of a sport or recreational activity. I tend to lean towards slightly less robust pursuits, like aprication (spending time basking in the sunshine).

I don't do much of that, Tidus, since I sunburn pretty easily. My outdoor activities tend to be more late-afternoon and into the evening, sometimes going downright crepuscular (happening during dusk or dawn twilight).

I like how professions and professionals establish their own terminology and thus their own sayings. Hawk circle certainly gives one the visual of aircraft stacked at various altitudes while circling as they wait to land.

Fire fighters "stretch" a hose; meaning lay it out from a water source (an apparatus) to the attack point (the point of entry to a structure or where one will initially spray water on the fire if it is an exterior fire). Thus the saying, you can stretch a hose, but you can't stretch a ladder - a reminder that when selecting a ladder, make sure it is the correct size (height) to get you to where you want to go.

Flathatting- Unauthorized low-level flying (such as inverted fly by's) sometimes career-ending, definitely a chewing out by the CAG which will test your Pucker Factor.
