Windows 8.1 - killed Skyrim & NMM

Well - live dangerously and get what you deserve I suppose, but I upgraded my main machine to Windows 8.1 today thinking (naively) "it's adding some bells & whistles, should be fine".

Since upgrade though, Steam is generally in trouble. Skyrim CTD, X-com won't start, and Tomb Raiders frame rate has dropped to a crawl.

Also - I can't get nexus mod manager to start either (even re-installed it, no joy).

Will try some things tonight, but wanted to forewarn other adventurous types... I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took windows 8.1 in the knee... :-(

If you're having a better experience or have fixed it, please let me know here..

Is there anyone else having similar problems?

I am running an Acer Aspire M5-481TG. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on day 1. Skyrim was the only problem I could find (But the only steam game I had installed on my laptop). I would click on Play on the Skyrim launcher, screen turned black like game was starting, then in a second I would be back on the desktop with a very generic error message.

Troubleshooting:

1. Basic checks, driver updates, reboots, set to compatibility mode.... No joy.

2. Uninstall, reinstall Skyrim. No joy.

3. Uninstall Steam, Nexus Mod Manager, Skryim, then reinstall. No joy.

4. Win 8.1 iso now available as we are on day two of troubleshooting) Fresh install of Windows 8.1, update drivers, install Steam & Skyrim (No nexus mod manager yet). SAME ISSUE.

On the fresh install, I only had some issues with .net framework. A driver package (ETD touchpad, maybe?) and Skyrim were asking for it, but Windows said it's baked into the OS. Nothing is currently in Programs and Features for .net framework.

Sure, I can go back to Windows 8, but I like to be ahead of the game for my customers. So I'd like to stick with 8.1 but I need my Dovahkiin.

Any ideas?

I had no problems running Skyrim on Windows 8.

1. My laptop ran smoother on Win 8 than it did on 7.

2. This happened when I updated to Windows 8.1 Preview.

3. As stated above, I am trying to keep Windows 8.1 Preview because I have to learn it before my customers come to me with questions.

Hello! I came across this thread after encountering the same issue with XCom in Windows 8.1. I managed to correct it, and wanted to drop by to give an update (for your benefit and the benefit of anyone else who stumbles across this thread).

I'm running Windows 8.1 on an nVidia rig and XCom through Steam.

Can't vouch for Skyrim or Tomb Raider yet, but it's a start:

- Update nVidia drivers through Windows Update (it'll show up as an "optional update" in the install section)

- If you have messed around with compatibility and run as authorized user settings (I had, in my attempts to get it running), restore these settings to default (not as authorized user, not in compatibility mode)

- If Steam is giving you sass about the app already running, kill it in task manager (control-alt-del). You'll have to expand the Steam process to get at XCom.

I realize this is a very conditional solution, but this did work for me and the game is now running normally. Hope it works for you too!

Cheers!

I had the same problem. Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, and a number of games would crash on start, and the only games I could manage to play were Just Cause 2 and Metro 2033. Nexus Mod Manager still worked for me though, so I have no idea what's going on there. Some of the error logs that I read seem to indicate that the Steam overlay UI might be the culprit, as most of them say something about steamoverlayui.exe getting an error. Since games like Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas have the Steam DRM hard-coded into them, it would make sense that they would crash in this case, because they depend on that Steamworks check to run. Perhaps your best bet is to switch to the Steam beta update channel and wait for a beta release designed for Windows 8.1. It may also be a good idea to wait for some Windows 8.1 ready graphics drivers.

Until then I have rolled back to Windows 8, but the tech enthusiast in me can't stand not being on the bleeding edge :P Hopefully they fix all these issues before the final release.

EDIT: After reading a similar thread on the Steam community forums, a few people are reporting that installing these drivers have fixed people's problems: http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Windows/326.01/326.01-desktop-win8-preview-64bit-international-whql.exe&lang=us&type=GeForce

This will only work for Nvidia users, however, so AMD people will have to search for their equivalent.

Sorry you guys are having problems. The cynic in me thinks Microsoft is just getting back at Gabe for calling MS out on it's really dumb business moves lately. "Oh, did we break your little application? We're soooo, soooo sorry. Really. This was TOTALLY unexpected." Methinks Valve will win in the end. MS seems to want to be the next RIM.
