making a new save to use as something to fall back on

So i want to make a new save in skyrim to always be able to fall back on if something goes wrong with my current save. For instance, if my current save becomes too laggy and always crashes, i can just load up this other save, and then just play on that one. and btw, in this new save, i would use the console to make the level i was, have all the skills i had, perks, and weapons/items i had in the other save.

So my question really is, i want this new "back up" save to be totally clean. No mods on it until i actually have to use it. So when i make this new save, do i have to totally deactivate all my mods in the NMM (just for the time being while i make the save, afterwards i will continue my other save with the mods), so that they wont be in the new save? or can i just uncheck all the plugins in the load order? or does just unchecking mods not take them out of being loaded into the game

Even if you uncheck the esps the data is still in your game. And many mods, including but not limited to most texture mods, don't use esps. Your best bet is to actually go and deactivate all your active mods if you want to have a surefire way of making your backup save stable.

No save in Skyrim is clean, so if you deactivate those mods and make this fall-back save, remember that you could have trouble later on if you change the mods or reactivate them while playing that save and any future saves made after it.

Disk space is cheap and Bethesda games are crash-happy.

Don't rely on a single (or even a small handful) of save-files. Just keep creating new saves.

After you get up past a few hundred, go into your documents folder, find the My Games \ Skyrim folder and remove (or compress) the older saves.

Easy - if not already answered:

I do this regularly - especially before New Mod Activiation. (Now understand this is not 'fool proof'. But so far has not failed me.) With Steam Updates and I've confirmed this w/Bethesda.

So IF you are at points where the game is working "JUST FINE" with no issues at all:

Go to: <DRIVE>:\My Games\Skyrim\Saves

There you will find the Current and/or recent past saved game(s)

Create a directory - mine are titled with the MM-DD-YYYY (07-17-2013). DO NOT USE the / as obviously that will not be accpeted.

The use the copy Keyboard/Mouse command and copy the files into the current directory that you want to "fall back to".

I have had this practice save me from starting over a number of times w/the exception of Steam Updates - which I will not go into. >:(

Hope this helps!!
