Hey guys,

THis is an interesting issue that makes no real sense at all. but maybe someone else has had this issue.

I was playing about three days ago with no issues at all. in fact the save files in question worked and I know for a fact that this particular one did because i had reloaded the game from it. no mods were added since then, in fact nothing has been done with skyrim at all for the last three days. but now. if i attempt to load this savegame that three days ago worked, i get nothing itll show the load screen for about 30 seconds then crash. has anyone else seen this happen before? i have quite a few mods but i found that nmm doesnt automatically update mods but steam will update the game as they become available. has there been an update to skyrim in the last few days that causes this? any help is better than none at this point. thanks in advance.

This: "steam will update the game as they become available."

If you are still using the workshop for mods, then that is a likely cause of the problem. Like you said, the workshop will update your mods automatically (or remove them entirely, should the mod author remove their mod from the workshop.) That can destroy a game, if your savegame requires something that was in the mod's previous version that is no longer there.

That is the reason I no longer use the workshop, at all.

If you are using the workshop, I suggest you revisit the mod pages for all the workshop mods and look for the date of the last version change. In that way you may be able to at least identify which mod was involved. If you figure out which mod it was, you could try contacting the mod author and asking for the previous version. If it is a mod that is also hosted on the Nexus, you might try visiting the nexus page, because many mod authors host their previous versions as well as the current one. Reverting to the old version may allow you to open your game. If not, you might try a system restore to return your whole computer to a time before the mod was changed (not sure if this would work tho), or, if you make regular backups of files on your hard drive, you may be able to find a backup file for the former version of the mod.

If none of that works, and no one has a better idea, you may have to start a new game. :-(

In any case, once you get your game running, I would suggest playing with steam in offline mode, and maybe considering whether the workshop is worth it to you. Hope this helps!

Edit: this assumes you have tried older saves and absolutely ruled out a random savefile corruption.

I appreciate the advice im assuming there was no update to skyrim recently but ill shut off the updater ro skyrim specifically. as for workshop mods i had only a couple, of which i removed because they were turned off to begin with. there may also be an issue witht he fact im running the windows 8.1 preview as a number of updates occurred yesterday, so i might try rolling the system back to a week ago and see what happens.
