Attack of the Markarth Keep Guards

The second I walk into the Markarth Keep at the start of a new game, the guards try to kill me. The city guards are okay but the keep guards do not even stop to arrest me.

 

Is there a fix for this game breaker?

I'd first check to make sure you don't have a bounty. (Accidentally killing one of those chickens by the bridge where the Foresworn hang out can cause that. Then you could try going back to a save from before you committed whatever atrocity is so offensive to them.

 

Then I would consider any mods that might be influencing the situation....for example Civil War Overhaul may be involved, if you are using it and are the opposite faction from the guards (depending on where you are in the game, they might be stormcloak or imperial sympathizers). If you are using that mod there are console codes on the mod page that could help. Not sure what other mods in specific might be involved, but if yo look at your list you could probably pick them out.

 

Finally if it is just that run of the mill angry guards glitch, you can try this-- fast travel somewhere far away (like Whiterun or Riften, inside the hold or indoors, not out in the wilderness), wait a week in game time, then try returning. What you should now get, if it is the regular old glitch, is that the guards give you the "Don't I know you" line, which is annoying but ignorable. Or you should be able to respond and pay whatever fine/jail sentence they say you have earned.

Not using the Civil War mod, don't think I should have a bounty and I have not even begun the Forsworn Conspiracy, I will however try to enter Markarth again before this happened.

In my last game, I had this problem with both the inner Markarth Keep Guards and Stormcloaks in the field (even though I sided with the Stormcloaks).

 

Don't know how to use the spoiler feature to hide a long mod list, but I am wondering if any might know of a mod causing this effect:

BTW, is the Markarth Underkeep Guard a separate faction from the city guard since their behavior is different?

 

Does anyone know the console code for the Underkeep Guard to see if the Player.setcrimegold 0 command might do the trick?

I'm having the same problem. Ivarstead guards attacked me on site, but the people in the town weren't hostile towards me. Then I was attacked by the Stormcloaks in Falkreath.

 

EDIT: I have the CWO, but I started a new game and I haven't chosen a faction yet. Only level 15.

Have you killed any Thalmor Justicars or Imperial Legion soldiers escorting Stormcloak prisoners? The game keeps track of a hidden bounty separate from the hold factions. You did not mention if you sheathed your weapon and tried to surrender to the guards when they attack you.

 

Also, I hope that's not your load order, because it's 'out of order.' Replace it with a BOSS log (with the messages), include the list of plugins not recognized by BOSS if one is generated. Enclose them in spoiler tags so they won't clutter the screen.

I uninstalled CWO and started a new game. Now I'm having no problems whatsoever. The Falkreath guys aren't their and the Ivarstead Guard didn't attack me.
