Specifically, I want to remove anything related to cigarettes from my game, as half the time when I try to pick up a pack or carton my game crashes.

Is there an easy way to do this?

You have another underlying problem that you should address. You should take the time to find out why your game crashes with anything related to cigarettes. Having the game crash when you try to pick up cigarettes is not a normal action.

I wonder if you have better living through chems installed?

I know that overhauls vanilla cigarettes, and not in a good way.

better living through chems appears to be part of FWE, which I have installed. I have a patch which partially fixes this issue when looting talon corpses, but cigarettes in boxes often cause a CTD on pickup.

Sorry, I only half a cup of coffee when I read that. Where in your load order is that fix? I run FWE and that has always fixed the cigarette issue for me. Do you have another mod that loading after the Talon cigarette fix that effects cigs? Are you using WMK, that changes cigarettes also. If you use FO3edit look for mods using 0034068 and 0034069 if you load the Talon fix after any mod with those ID's you should be fine.

If it were me, I would remove better living through chems...

But, if you want, you could try to load up your game in FO3Edit and remove all the records that change cigs and cig cartons. Of course if these record changes are in an esm, you would have to change that to an esp first. Still, chances are that if you did this (reverting cigs back to their vanilla form), some modded custom script somewhere would go haywire and crash your game anyway.

My best advice would be to use FO3Edit to see which mods are changing the cig records, then remove each and every one, adding them back one-at-a-time (if there is more than one) to see at what point a CTD causing conflict arises.

Just an FYI - My mod, Underground City uses vanilla cigarettes in a quest. Better living through chems modified the vanilla cigs, rendering them useless for any mod that requires vanilla cigs. Another words, it crashed my mod. But the fault is with better living through chems as whomever modded that committed a cardinal modding sin of overwriting vanilla assets, when creating new ones would have allowed for compatibility with every other mod. Basically, when a modder changes a vanilla asset, he/she is saying to the modding community, "this particular asset is now the exclusive property of my mod" - that is a big no no to any quality modder.
