VetteSage
I'm in the same boat. Been modding Skyrim to get just the mods I feel the game "needs" in order to be enjoyable ... and each time I ease into a stable game, it's only an hour or two before it starts "crash city" (as in, crashes, then CTDs on startup, or CTDs within the first few seconds, to where it's no longer playable). I don't use the huge mods like Falskaar and all those, I don't use mods that dramatically alter gameplay. I typically just use UFO (because I'd like more than one follower, usually I have three followers), a few follower mods (because the normal ones look like crap), and some armor/weapon mods. I also never use anything that's less than 1,000 endorsements. Skyrim on its own was fun for the first day, learning about it. The NPCs all look like absolute crap though. I know it's a different "time" and it's not in a polished city ... but I'm not going to marry an old hag or keep a follower that looks like she was dragged through a mud puddle and then hit in the face with a meat grinder. It's just sad when you spend more time fixing things than you do actually playing.
srsparky32
its why ive basically just kept my mods down to a bare minimum. ENB and all the required texture packs and mesh overhauls to not make th game look like poo. and then some cool custom armor/armor retexs (amidianborn anyone??) ..i never installed monster mod and such because of the game's sensitivity to mods. i've rarely ever had a CTD because of this principle, but if i get the crash city as described above i just uncheck all esp's and see if that fixes, then activate a bunch of them and see if it works and so forth. it seems to have a lot of issues with SKSE and SKSE based mods from what i've been noticing. the game really does not like scripts also for people that are like me and think the NPC's look absolutely atrocious, search for magicaljellybean, his overhauls of Aela, etc are ridiculously amazing. But even with all the problems skyrim has visually and performance wise its still the greatest game ive ever had the privilege of playing. There have been a few times where my game was broken beyond belief (one skeleton mod made everyone in the game including my character not have any animations at all) and it actually gave me a sick to my stomach feel because my favorite game was unplayable. i spent close to 2 hours fixing it and its worth it. ruvuk
My only message to OP is this... Why do you play a Bethesda computer game if you don't want a game that has glitches, bugs, or CTDs...?I've been asking myself that very question, and I only have maybe 1/100th the problems that plague RS13. I really like Skyrim a lot, but I can't keep putting the time into maintaining the game. Or whatever. I only use a small number of mods (40, tops), and most of those are just mods that add armor and other odds and ends. But it seems like I never sit down to play that *something* goes wrong. Most of the problems are just the small glitches that I've learned to ignore. But some of them are serious. If anybody knows of a more-stable game that might substitute for Skyrim, I'm about ready to give it a try. I'd really enjoy a game that were just a game--and not also an ongoing hassle. (I'm sort of cranky about how the Bethesda crew has handled the problems. They must know. If I have the facts straight, I'm guessing that Bethesda's probably working like mad to get Skyrim Online ready for next year's release. But I sure wish the mgmt. at Bethesda would shift the priorities a little.) @RS13: Wish I could offer you something helpful, but I'm really just some guy who wanted to play the darn game. Good luck, OK?

Good luck, OK? I've been fighting with Skyrim for the past four days trying to get my mods optimized to stay under the stupid 3.1gb ceiling. I can hardly step outside of a city or run to a location without getting ready to count every 20 steps and make a new save because I just know the freeze is going to hit any second and the only way I can get further is to end process and reload from where I crashed and keep walking. It's like driving a car with no gas tank, you have to stop and put more fuel in the motor every few hundred yards. I absolutely cannot run from Whiterun to Riverwood without getting a guaranteed freeze approximately around the Honingbrew Meadery where I have to restart the game and continue running from. And, doing open world quests or exploring landscape? Forget it. 32-bit secret police come to disappear you, Dragonborn. I just wish Bethesda would learn that their PC versions of games are going to be modded, that's pretty much why they exist. Rather than doing nearly direct ports for PC and console, they should at least put some kind of basis in place that allows the PC version of the game to exceed its hardcoded limits, however they could do that is beyond me. It's a fact that PCs will exceed consoles in performance, leaving breathing room for more options on PC would only do good things for the game, but it's not about anything but the money. And about other things to play, the Witcher 3 should be coming out sometime in 2014 and CDPR has promised a massive open world setting like TES games, only with better quest structure and things (i.e. pretty much everything, they know how to write the hell out of some "busy work" quests and do combat). It doesn't really offer the "roleplayability" that TES does, though, since ultimately you're locked into one character. The Witcher 1 and 2 are great themselves and worth playing through if you haven't ever done so, and want a break from all the Skyrim hassle. BababooeyHTJ
This is exactly why I never got to play Oblivion modded. I've tried a ton of times and put in a ton of research and not once was I able to get a stable game going. Very disappointing. I'm ready to give Skyrim a shot but I'm going to go on the conservative side.

DavidMDinville
To topic creator, I feel your pain. You precisely, succinctly, eloquently, verbosely, loquaciously, articulately, summed up my experience with the "wonderful" world of modded skyrim. So many mods I want to use, but can't seem to prevent the dreaded CTD. Now that I've gotten a taste of what mods can do for this game, I find it near impossible to go back to the regular old "way it was meant to be played" vanilla skyrim. Seriously, go play a vanilla dungeon/cave/ruin. Now, go install an ENB with ELFX or RLO and play again. Near impossible to go back. Essential mods for me:Smoking TorchesRealvison + ELFX (only for dungeon/cave/ruin gameplay)Wet and ColdFrostfall
