Birrii
Hi.I don't know if your country has got the same problem, but in norway, we have female police officers with hijbas. (Hijab is that what arabian women have on their heads)Has your country got the same problem? What do you think about this? Do you think it's OK for police officers to use hijabs? Callighan
Not a problem. Some policewomen in Indonesia wear hijabs, albeit rare. It's not mandatory not prohibited. Since arabic culture is quite accepted and has acculturated into pre-existing culture here, it's not a problem. Perhaps you view it as a problem as this seems to permeate the current norwegian culture? And if you think it's invasive in a way, what would you think about sikh policemen in a western country? The problem is that it is in Norway. If it is in the other countries where it is it's culture, then I'll just live with it. When you use it under a police job, it is actually serious. the policemen have to be neutral, but with the hijabs, they show their religion and culture. Callighan
And you think the non hijab wearing policewomen are not neutral? I can understand your discomfort, though. You're experiencing culture shock. I assume there's already protests against this in Norway?Perhaps if you disagree, you could protest it or petition the government. If, of course, the system permits. I personally would like Europe to stay Europe in culture. Though I'd like to see pockets of this and that non European communities in European cities. exanimis
Here in the U.S there is a dress code in each of the police departments. There is a standard set, Imagine a police officer coming to your door with a big gold cross around his neck, carrying a bible. Imagine going to a military base and seeing soldiers walking around wearing hijbas. There are standards, they are set for a reason, let one group change one thing and you can not deny the next group. I am not offended when I see someone dressing in their native gear but it does not belong in the police department any more than it belongs in the military. If you refuse to wear the uniform, don't take the job.

If you refuse to wear the uniform, don't take the job.Although I would be inclined to agree, the issue is probably a bit more dependent on what the uniform is. In the US, most official uniforms have hats which are a component of that uniform, so there would likely be some problem if that religious garb interfered with the uniform. Afterall, people are allowed to wear crucifixes and other religious symbols on a chain around their neck, or on their lapel, so long as it doesn't interfere with the function and appearance of the rest of their uniform. Realistically, it's not as objectionable as something like a full veil, or other religious "modesty" garb women are required to wear. All it is is a covering of the hair. A police officer without being able to see the face could end up fairly badly, not to mention the lack of peripheral vision.
