anouseringu
I have found that some keys are not possible to remap. I found the same problem in oblivion but tweaking ini files fixed it. But i have spent a lot of time reading fallout ini files and there is no way to remap some important keys. You can remap vats and loot (use) keys but once they open they do not close with the same key and options inside (accept return close) show a key next to them (a, b, e) that are not configurable in menu or even ini files. As there is a preety good modding community here maybe you can help me with a trick or even solve this lack with a little mod. I can say you thaqt i have found this web after reading for hours and there are a hugh amount of posts all over the web from ppl saying really bad things about this game for this reason so you will be helping a lot of users that donot use wasd. It is like bethesda having some nasty feelings against pc users because it was the same for oblivion, limited keyboard mouse remapping, low res and small hud and equipment and trading menus. It is like they make the game for consoles and then they make a poor conversion for pc of it.
Skotte
What Version # are you using? I think the 1.1 patched tried to fix that. And Beth has said that the 360 was the "mother" system for Fallout
anouseringu
I installed game from disc and patched today before launching it. The fix was to open and close pip boy (before you opened it with any binded key but closing it was still fixed in tab key). All those actions inside vats and loot menus are fixed in keys (a b e). And about consoles i personally think that they should get more flexibility and learn from pc and not the opposite. And i hate playing any modern game with a gamepad i really dont understand ppl doing it some even plug them in a pc to substitute keyboard and mouse that is something i cannot understand. Skotte
Oh ok, I understand what you mean now. Consoles:not to bash them but yeah I agree for me there is no substitute for a mouse & keyboard tho I'm sure there are those that feel that the pad is mightier than the mousepad
Rephindel
I've been having the same problem with my keys. I'm left-handed, so I use IJKL key configuration. Here are the menus/actions I am having trouble with off the top of my head: VATS (Accept/Cancel)Loot (Take All/Exit)Wait (Wait/Cancel)Shop (Accept/Cancel)Lockpicking (Force Lock)Help Files (I forget)Pip-Boy (Repair in Weapons menu)
FallSurfer
I hate to dig up a slightly old topic but I am in the exact same situation as Rephindel above. I too am left handed and would like to be able to bind the keys he mentioned to something else, most importantly the VATS Accept button! Has anything since March come out of the modding community that might help us? :)
aynjell
I've create a program that automatically mods these keybindings, it requires that the user extracts the bsa file first. I may add this feature in the future, but the program works and creates new files that work for fallout menus (the same files, just with new mappings). You can't use special characters to my knowledge with this program but it works. I'm trying to finish writing up the readme so users know how to use it (it requires other programs to support it). Is there still any interest in this? I'm fairly certain the program can be expanded to new vegas and skyrim, but I wanna say it's totally fixed in skyrim now?
