Skyrim Special Edition Won't Play

TL;DR: Can't run Skyrim Special Edition, with or without mods. The game crashes or moves at like -1 fps. I have given up on mods and I'm just looking to get the game up and running.

Please bear with me, I'm technologically illiterate, as well as generally stupid.

I downloaded Special Edition for the first time a couple of days ago, along with Vortex. I've been able to play the regular Skyrim for 10 years now, but I thought I'd finally upgrade.

The thing is, the game doesn't work for me. When I have mods (namely Random Alternate Start), I can somewhat run the game. It's incredibly laggy, going in or out of first-person mode lags and takes almost a minute, and the game will pause every two seconds or so, to lag for 10. I can't run, make turns or do anything without the game lagging out.

Without any mods, the game won't even load a new file. I try to start a new game, and I get to the loading screen. But then it'll freeze completely.

I don't think it's some hardware issue. I can play Sims 4 just fine, and that game is an unoptimized, RAM-eating mess. I have the system specs for the game, I have everything set on the lowest settings, I've tried following every guide that involves going into Skyrim prefs and changing things, nada. I tried everything I could find online, but nothing works. But I figured I'd here as a last-ditch effort, in case I missed something super obvious.

If anyone can help me, or get me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. I just don't get tech at all.

EDIT: "Video hardware not identified" is one issue I have, but I don't know if it makes a difference, since I already have all the options set to as low as they can go.

EDIT: To be clear, I'm fine going without mods. Mods aren't the issue here, though. The game just doesn't work with, or without mods.

If you downloaded Skyrim SE through Steam, you might be able to navigate to Steam, logon, and go through the process of having it validate the integrity of your Skyrim SE files.

There are tutorials on how to do that, as we don't know them off the tops of our heads.

We also don't know if the recent release of Skyrim AE will affect Steam's validation of your files process.

The Skyrim SE first-time launcher screen does detect your video settings and so they should be configurable and provide resolution and performance options at the moment the first flash-screen pops up.

What I did when the last update trashed my game: I started a new one (a default Nord named X1), then added a few mods. If it ran OK, great, I added a few more. If it didn't run (which happened frequently), I subtracted some mods and tried again (with X2). Eventually, I was up to X65, but had added almost 300 mods, and the game ran. If you can get by with fewer mods (most of us can), it won't take as long.

Might try posting on the Vortex forum and see if they can help. You should be able to launch a vanilla game through Steam I would think. I would not worry about Steam being unable to find to find your video settings as that is a common message when first launching a new game on Steam.I just use Ultra but you can use whatever you feel your system will support.

I can't be of much help as I do not play the AE version.

I doubt that you can make SSE work with mods, at the moment, because SKSE hasn't updated yet. So, the best bet is to try to roll back an update, play Skyrim legacy, or even Oblivion. I followed Gopher's advice, and backed things up as well as not choosing to update. I knew it was going to take a while to update SKSE, so I am sticking with what I know, and going to await for the team to update SKSE, then update the game, and all the mods.
