Anyone understand how Imagespaces and Eye Adaption works?

I'm trying to make the lighting in a dark cave area feel a little more natural/playable by using HDR to enhance the darkness when your around bright lights and let "your eyes adjust" when your looking in to the darkness.

 

The lighting engine is capable of this but I can't figure out how to tune the Imagespace for this myself.
