Oblivion query involving external hard drives

This sounds like an interesting idea, Portable Oblivion. My first guess is you will need separate Oblivion.ini files for each computer at a minimum. I would think most of the mods and saves would work though.

Before starting, do a backup of your \data folder, and the folder that has your save games & .ini.

I think you will have to start a new game on each computer, with no mods and no saves. Then at least back up the .ini. After you have it working copy over your mods and save games. After the first time, I think you will only have to change the .ni for each computer.

Let us know how it goes.

Well, it's not nearly as easy as it sounds. Oblivion, like most games, is installed on a computer. This means, of course, copying the data into a folder so that it can run. However, for the game to run, there needs to be registry entries so that Windows knows where to "look" for stuff. Without those, the EXE would do nothing. You'll need to install the registry keys for each computer, as well as mods such as the unofficial patches.

Most games are not optimized for portable use. I'd recommend using a different alternative, such as having the DVD on you, as well as a jump drive or something of the sort that contains the installers and save data.

As long as you do the install from Disk to the portable HDD it will set up the proper entries in the registry. However, many of the settings in the ini are hardware related. So the install may have to be done for each computer.

So, for the first computer, pluh in the HDD, use the disk to do the install. Then, start the game and make a save, put in all patches - I'm not really they are needed for the INI.

Then, plug it into the second computer, save the original ini file with a different name. You will probably have to manually remove the game before trying anything on this one. Again, using the disk install it. Again save etc. Make a copy of this ini with a different name, just remember which ini is for which computer.

You will still have only one copy of Oblivion running, just with 2 .ini files. Stay away from any mods that make changes to the ini, such as streamline.
