Are there any mods known for permanently making FPS worse over time?

Around the time that AE has dropped, I've been having some strange issue where my game's FPS has been gradually getting worse as I play and I can't seem to regain it even from a game and system restart, and this doesn't seem to be a hardware issue as this problem persisted even after putting all my graphical settings on the lowest. Due to my mod setup, ordinarily I'd have around 60fps with some drops down into the 40s and 30s, but it seems like the game is now having trouble getting up to 60. At one point it was just permanently down into the 30s with drops into the 20s and I had no choice but to reload the game to a save I made back in October.

beside this enb adds and improves effects frequently.

 

regarding your load order: no clue, if loot has no claims/errors/warnings.

maybe an issue with lightened skyrim, but u could have also merged something wrong in Lightened Skyrim - merged.esp

Thanks for the response, I'll go ahead and disable and clean the mod for the time being and see if anything improves on my end.

 

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like it helped it as I'm noticing a loss of a few frames over time. On another note, I'm also seeing heavy framerate drops and stutters in some outdoor areas and some NPC filled inns.

I do have the 2080Ti, 64 Gb RAM, Z490-E motherboard, i7-10700 Intel and 1Tb SSD drive and my load order has at the most 110 mods and still I am getting sometimes and in some areas, less FPS and stuttering .... so I do not believe that you should be free of FPS loss / stuttering specially with the amount of mods that you are running in your game.

 

Just do the math = let say that you have 2 followers, and in that cell another 5 enemies spawn + in that cell 6 mods activate at the same time and that cell is full of objects that are part of the game ..... you will have probably less FPS than if you are in a cell where you are only walking with your followers or alone. That is the way the game handles.

 

The more mods that are triggering in that cell, the more chances you will have issues with FPS and you have a lot of mods in your load order that I have never played with. I know that Sexlab mods cause FPS loss for example and I do not use it at all. You should review your load order and eliminate some cause honestly you do not need that many to play this game, but that is my personal opinion. I am very selective and I get a lot of things, via Console Commands.

Just do the math = let say that you have 2 followers, and in that cell another 5 enemies spawn + in that cell 6 mods activate at the same time and that cell is full of objects that are part of the game ..... you will have probably less FPS than if you are in a cell where you are only walking with your followers or alone. That is the way the game handles.

 

The more mods that are triggering in that cell, the more chances you will have issues with FPS and you have a lot of mods in your load order that I have never played with. I know that Sexlab mods cause FPS loss for example and I do not use it at all. You should review your load order and eliminate some cause honestly you do not need that many to play this game, but that is my personal opinion. I am very selective and I get a lot of things, via Console Commands.

lol, thanks for the response, I actually have close to 600 mods installed, though most of those are bug fixes and addon content flagged as ESL. It's wasn't so much of an issue of FPS dropping if there was too much activity going on in one cell, but rather a mod was causing stability issues for the game's engine no matter where I was in the game which was causing not only permanent FPS loss but stutters as well. In any case, I've already managed to determine that the mod Arenas of Skyrim was causing this issue for me, I surmise that the issue is how that mod handles spawning NPCs, they probably kept appearing in a cell somewhere without getting properly disabled and deleted which ended up putting stress on the engine over time (the problem didn't become noticeable until almost 2 months after installing that mod). As soon as I disabled it, those problems disappeared.

Here are some tips:

 

Engine Fixes and other modifications concerning Papyrus can help greatly with Performance bugs such as stutter when turning around etc.

SSE Display Tweaks will make the Game run smoother as much as your monitor refresh rate allows.

 

Whatever Mod distributes Items/ Effects to leveled lists is better if it uses Spell Perk Item Distributor instead of cloak spells for example. SPID has an INI for that.

 

In regards to Scripts, you just want to find the most Lightweight alternatives that don't rely on constantly running scripts in the background.

A mod can have a ton of scripts but if its a Trigger only its ok.

Same goes for Quest Mods that rely on a Quest running constantly. There are alternatives. Some mods also need propper polishing. I avoid those.

 

Doing some basic Optimization to textures for your load order with Cathedral Asset Optimizer saves alot of VRAM as do BC7 Compressions.

There is alot of Texture Mods that have too big of a file size while other ''Better'' are smaller, this plays a big role for the Engine Loading them.

I for example use a 2K-1K retexture for everything in the Game except Dragons/ Sky/ Mountains that must be bigger 4K-8K.

 

Your Hardware could be a Beast but Skyrim's Engine is older than other Games and has trouble processing in the same speed as they do.

Propper patching and conflict resolution aside from helping with stability, also help the Engine determine rules/ values/ priorities properly.

There is quality and performance even in Scripts. Some Scripting is simply better and more proffesional.

 

ENB no matter what needs some Ini modification for each user to be fully optimized for your hardware and load order otherwise its always taxing. ENB is a Hack and an attempt to make the Game look better but even its Creator says that the Engine is bad for ENB, and the Binaries themselves decrease the Engine's capability to Process Data and the more taxing that Data or the Effects applied the more it slows down.

I am not a Fan of ENB for the exact reason and instead i rely on Weather Lighting mostly and let ENB handle the Colorgrading and Reflections (Wet Shaders etc. instead) but then again i like ENB in other Games where it works fine.

 

Light and FX can also be important. I found Relighting Skyrim/ ELE/ Custom Light Bulb modifications and ENB Light to be much more customizable and consistent for each load order.

 

LODs. LODs are a Lifesaver not just for Visual Quality but if done properly can deliver great Visuals and be much more performance friendly then the Vanilla LOD system.

 

Lastly there is Physics and Collision per NPC. Because Skyrim's Physics are not as advanced and were never designed for stuff like that (such as HDT) any mod added Physics processed for each NPC can slow the Game down greatly as does Polygon count.

 

With my newest Gameplay Load Order i finished modding today altough is till have to add some Character Overhauls (I added even Clutter and better Tomato's lol), i have 9 ESM's, 68 ESP's, 40 ESL's, (around 24 of ESP-ESL's are Patches) and my Mod List Size is 13,7GB and have alot of room for Quest and Aventure Mods while i covered everything else with Retextures, Combat/ Animation/ AI/ Perks Skills etc.

 

I use a 4GB VRAM GPU and with ENB i reach 47FPS the lowest but mostly its around 52-54 in areas around Whiteruns City and over 55-57 always everywhere else with Trees/ Grass. In Snowy Areas it 60+ and Interiors with Retextures it goes over 70+ if i look at the Sky it reaches 87-90. GPU never exceeded 90% usage either. 4GB VRAM = Potato by todays standards but it runs smoothly.

 

So its all a matter of Optimization.
