Bad VATS lag?

Ok, so i've got FO3 running perfectly.

A mix of high/medium settings, 1440x900, HDR and vSync.

Everything runs smooth indoors (estimate 40+) and outdoors (estimate 29+).

But as soon as i press the VATS, everything will lag seriously. As in, 15fps.

Then as soon as i leave the vats, everything will start to run laggy (about 22fps) until i go indoors then back out (at which point it will fix itself)

What's up with that?

I can understand vats lagging a little bit, but not to such an extreme extent..

and why does it continue to lag even after i've exited vats and the enemy is dead?

Any help?

specs;

Vista Ultimate SP1 (speed modded)

2.53ghz Intel C2D (45nm)

ATI Radeon HD 3670 (1gb)

4gb 800mhz DDR2

2x 250gb 5400RPM HDDs

This is a very common bug which is still unresolved by either Bethesda or the FO3 community (as far as I know). It's not your PC, I'm sure. It affects some people more than others but I'm not really certain why.

We may just have to wait for an official patch to fix the issue. Personally to make up for V.A.T.S. being Überlag, I downloaded the DK_BulletTime mod. It's a nice, balanced alternative which lets you slow the game down and aim manually for a continuous AP cost, with the upside that it doesn't make your PC puke a fat one.

If you're not really into that, I've also found that after using V.A.T.S., if you drag your mouse around frantically in first person you can 'shake' off the post-vats-lag a little quicker. No idea if this will work for you, but it does for me.
