Problem with uGridsToLoad

I recently heard of a Skyrim.ini tweak that could be performed load more grids, thus making far off stuff seem a lot better detailed. The default was uGridsToLoad=5 and I changed it to uGridsToload=7, and that made Skyrim crash (along with the plethora of mods) a lot and the loading times take forever, so I preceded to change it back to it's original state, but when I went back to my save it crashed immediately on all my saves, inside or outside, that I changed the uGrid value, and I had been using the extra grids for a while. Other saves or new games that I didn't use it on were just fine, so I'm guessing that when less grids were loaded it decided to load less from my player, and well, crashing. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I would like to have my saves back. Thank You.

That's well known in Skyrim. Increasing ugrids ALWAYS causes crashes when you switch it back to a lower ugrids on the same save.

There are guides for repairing your save from ugrids crashes, but I don't know of any by name so I can't link them to you.

I pulled out the important bit for him. :)

Importantly: Aside from lowering performance and causing potential instability due to the greatly increased resource usage when raising uGridsToLoad, if you save a game after you have altered this value, the new value will be incorporated into your saved game. This is worth noting because the game only allows you to load a saved game which has an equal or lower uGridsToLoad value than your current value; you will not be able to open a saved game with a higher uGridsToLoad value. This means if you lower your uGridsToLoad value again, you won't be able to load up the saves which used the higher value. So you should extensively test any change to your uGridsToLoad before committing to saving the game. If you need to revert a change in uGridsToload in an existing save game follow the steps below:

  1. Start Skyrim and load up a saved game.
  2. Use ALT+TAB to switch out of Skyrim and back to your Desktop.
  3. Edit the Skyrim.ini file as normal, modifying the uGridsToLoad variable to the desired lower value. Save Skyrim.ini and close it.
  4. Use ALT+TAB to switch back to Skyrim.
  5. Open the Command Console using the tilde ~ key and type refreshini.
  6. Save your game to a new save slot, and it should now have the correct new uGridsToLoad value.

I've played around with uGrids a lot and can report that the reversion method posted above by Renn works perfectly. With an i7 3930K @ 3.2 GHz and a GTX 580 w/3G, I run very stably at uGrids=7, but 9 is very unstable.

Anything over 7 will undoubtedly be unstable unless you are running a screaming fast hard drive array, and anything over 11 would require an array of SSDs. You are much better off having ugrids set to 7 before you start a new game and then not changing it for the duration of the playthrough, just like you are better off sticking with the mods you started that game with all the way to the end without adding (not too much of a problem) or especially removing (often a very big problem) any.

The method posted by Renn works most of the time so I have heard, if you can get Skyrim to re-engage after alt+tabbing out and back. This rarely works for me, though sometimes I can get the save completed and then quit and restart Skyrim and everything is ok.
