emilsuperman
Hello! I, like many others, have started playing Skyrim again now that Bethesda seemingly is done with the game, picking up DLCs and so on. On my latest save, I've completed around 85% of Dragonborn and 70% of Dawnguard or so, haven't bothered with main quest or any other factions quests due to just wanting to play through the new DLCs. So far, I'm level 50 with around 50 hours in, and since last night I've encountered random CTDs ever since I cleared out the dungeon "Broken Oar Grotto" northwest of Solitude. I checked my save files, and for some reason they are now abnormally huge - the latest quicksave being 50 mb, an older save with 4h less playtime is 44 mb and a save 3 hours before that is only 16 mb. Could the chrashing be related to the save file size? Something is bloating/has bloated it like hell apparently. My Load order can be found below and my current rig is a GTX 560 Ti graphics card, 6 GB ram, Intel Core2 Duo E6850 CPU on windows 7 and I haven't experienced any problems up until now. Basically, what happens is that I load my save file - get in game and after 1-2 minutes it crashes, doesn't matter if I just stand idle and do nothing or do stuff, it just crashes somehow. Thankful for any kind of help. Georgiegril
Yes it does sound like save bloat. Unfortunately there are no real save game cleaners (there are some that claim to do this, try them at your risk. Personally I think they do more harm than good and can cause lasting, irreparable damage down the line even if you notice an immediate positive effect.) So... The first thing I would try is to go back to your last full save that is a reasonable size (16 MB is reasonable.)Make sure you have that skse.ini line--[General]ClearInvalidRegistrations=1 (You may have to create a skse.ini inside data\skse and add this line.)That will help clean up a certain kind of script clutter. Save game file size can also be affected by things like number of items in your inventory, number of followers, number of quests in your log, so it might help to sell or stash as much as possible, close out minor quests that are clogging your journal, and dismiss as many followers as you can. I notice you are using a mod that greatly increases your carry weight limit--too many items in your personal inventory could definitely be contributing to the problem. Other than that, I would also take a look at your mods in TES5Edit, make sure they are all cleaned up and compatible, then recheck your load order and Bashed patch. Then I would keep a close eye on my save game file size--as soon as you notice any bloat, go back again to a reasonable save file and start logging papyrus; it may help you determine which mod or mods are involved.(enabling the log may decrease your game's performance, so I wouldn't do that until you actually need to.) Finally, I would make sure that you have all unessential background services/apps disabled, are playing with Steam in offline mode and have disabled autosaves. Autosaves are much more likely to cause savegame corruption, because they continually overwrite old files, and because they may save in the middle of a script being executed. You have a lot of mods that add scripts, so I would be especially cautious about that.
emilsuperman
Sigh.. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. I hate replaying stuff, esp. playing on Legendary difficulty. Oh well. I have had auto-save active along with all these mods from day 1, but I haven't had the skse.ini. Should it look just like this? And be placed here: C:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Data\SKSE ? [General]ClearInvalidRegistrations=1 PS. Which of my mods are most script heavy? (If you know) - I wouldn't mind removing some, e.g UFO since I don't use followers anymore. Edited August 24, 2013 by emilsuperman
Georgiegril
Yes, just add those lines to a text file and rename it skse.ini, place in the location you indicated. Autosaves will become increasingly more likely to create corrupted save files, because they overwrite. I really recommend you do not use them. IsharaMeradin has a nice mod that will allow your game to make full saves at regular intervals, so they have the convenience of autosaves with much less likelihood of corruption. There are a few similar mods, I just happen to admire IsharaMeradin's work. I know what you mean about replaying, it is painful. Worse to have to start all over, though. I am afraid you may have to do that, depending on how successfully you recreated your mod list. As far as removing mods that are script-heavy-- the problem with mods that add scripts is that they generally cannot be removed completely, even if you follow exactly the instructions of the mod author. It is not the mod author's fault; rather it is a "feature" of the game engine. (There's an official statement about it on the Bethesda Blog somewhere, basically saying that complete removal is only possible if you revert to a save from before you first installed the mod.) Unless you can determine that a specific mod is spamming your papyrus, or has some unresolvable conflict with your other mods, I would not recommend removing any of them. Because in all cases, removing mods with scripts may cause new, and even game-breaking, problems. That is why I suggested that you might have a look at your papyrus log if you continue having problems--sometimes the mod related to the problem can be identified in this way (although many crashes are not related to scripts, and in any case, the papyrus log does not capture crash data--it crashes along with the rest of the game.) The other thing with time-related mods I forgot to mention--have you taken a look at your running temps while playing? It could be that your graphics card is overheating (maybe due to settings, mods, or even just dust in your case), and it takes a couple minutes for the card to get hot enough to trigger a shut-down. emilsuperman
I'll get Ishara's save mod asap. I'll start replaying tomorrow I guess, too pissed to do it today, hehe. I hope they make the next incarnations of Creaton Kit/Gamebryo engine more smart about this to allow modders and players to experience less of these lingering problems and to make it smoother to stop using x mod. I doubt it's overheating since I've played many, many, many hours without it ever happening previously running different games of various required graphical and cpu performances. Thank you very much for your help, I appreciate it immensely and am sad that there's nothing to do. :(
