Well I just tried to do it again, And nothing. Right now I have my vault open, The filter box checked, I typed FX in the window, I clicked on IndFXLightRays01, it turns blue, I hit the 1 key twice and nothing. Now I'm not trying to be a smartass or nothing, could it be that my key board is wireless. I don't know, Obviously it is working for every thing else and everyone says the same thing 1 twice should hide it. I would love to get it working because now if sometihng is in my way I have to move it or delete it. I use "A, M, F, Ctrl D, Ctrl F, Ctrl Z.." A lot so I know that part works fine???????Thanks for the list. Iwill print it out.

Hmmm... In the GECK, on the menu bar, select Edit then Render Window Hotkeys. Scroll down until you see an entry for Show/Hide selected object(s) and select it. Is this key set to '1' with no modifiers? If the answer is no, try clicking the Restore Defaults button or simply set its value to '1' with no modifiers. If the answer is yes, then this is quite the conundrum...

Go to this ASCII conversion website and type 1 into the first box (Text ASCII/ANSI) then click the Convert button. You should see 31 hex and 49 decimal as the response. If you don't, there is something screwy with you keyboard setup. If you do, then I am stumped as to why the GECK won't read your 1 key.

Ok I went to the converter Typed in 1 and got, Hex 0x31, Decimal 49, Binary 110001 . I did what you suggested in the GECK Edit, Render Window Hotkeys, It was set on 1 with no modifiers. I did Restore Defaults, then tryed it on my vault......Nothing. So I tried it on Vault 106....Nothing. If it wasn't such a pain to work without it I would say screw it. Maybe I will blow the cob webs off my old mouse/keyboard and see if that works, But I can not be the only person using the GECK and a wireless keyboard.

I am sorry to hear that. As it stands, I have little in the way of new ideas for you. I also use a wireless mouse, but on a PC. You are using a laptop, right? Regardless, maybe try updating your wireless mouse software/drivers? Using that wired mouse sounds like a good idea as well. I dunno.... Something is peculiar, that is for sure.

There is little doubt from my point of view that hiding objects is one of the most useful functions in the GECK.

I just had a new idea. Why not try setting the show/hide selected objects key to something other than 1. Set it to a key that you know already works for some other function. You can always set it back later, but this way you can discern whether it's a keyboard/mouse issue or an issue with the GECK/feature itself.

Well here's deal. I installed FO3 (Did not update) on my other computer, Wireless mouse with wired keyboard. Played it enough to get a saved game. Installed the GECK (with update). Watched the bethsoft video three more times to make sure I wasn't missing any thing I did it step by step pausing the video as I went I even used the same cell he was using and the 1 key does the same thing. I am obviously missing something. I am on a desktop, Not laptop, don't know if that matters or not. I get that BINK sound, The one you get when you are doing somthing wrong, On both of them. Now for it to do the same thing on two different computers, Two different Mouse/Keyboard setups I'm thinking somewhere there is a step missing. I tried changing the hot key to "H" then "A", Same thing. Maybe I will see if I can find another video to see if the one I watched is missing something. Wish me luck ;-) Oh and even if I never get this figured out, The help you have offered is apprecited.Thanks a bunch

I don't think there is anything you are missing with the video tutorials. I started out with them myself years ago. Using the 1 key to hide objects in the render window works no differently than using the M key to toggle markers or the A key to toggle lighting.

I agree that having the same issue on two separate machines most likely implies you are doing something wrong. So let me give you some steps to follow....

First, have you ever installed Fallout 3 on these machines in the past? If so, the old Geck ini files might still be in use. If you've never installed FO3 before, this is a moot point. But if you have, delete (or just move or rename them, just in case) GECKCustom.ini and GECKPrefs.ini from your

C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\My Documents\My Games\Fallout3 folder or where ever else they are if you are not using Windows XP like I am. When you start up the GECK, they should be recreated for you with default settings.

With that out of the way, try this....

1) Start the GECK

2) From the Menu bar, select File then Data.

3) Locate the Fallout3.esm at the top of the TES file list and double click on it such that an 'X' appears in the box to the left of the file name.

4) Click the OK button on the lower right of the Data window.

5) Let Fallout 3 load, answer Yes to All if any messages pop up.

6) Once loaded, you should have three windows: Cell View, Object Window and Render Window.

7) Locate the Cell View window and double click on the second entry from the top: AlexandriaArms01 - let it load.

:cool: Click anywhere inside the render window or along its blue border at the top of the window to make it active. When a window is active, its border will be a darker blue color than the inactive windows and it will be on top.

9) Press the A key. Does the cell get brighter?

10) Press the M key. Do the light objects vanish (along with other marker objects)?

11) Press the M key again. Do the light objects reappear?

12) Click on one of the the two light objects - the transparent circles with the large white + inside them.

13) If the light object is highlighted, it should be surrounded by a 3-D box made up of green, red and blue lines representing the X,Y&Z coordinates (but not necessarily in that order).

14) It might be hard to see the blue lines since you are looking straight down at them.

15) With the light object highlighted, press the 1 key once and then twice. You should see the light object become more transparent and then vanish.

If you get that BINK sound, then all I can think of is that feature is somehow disabled on the version of the GECK you have. Why that is I can not say. Do you live outside of the USA? Where did you get your version of the GECK? I assume from Bethesda. Weird.

NOTE: The 1 key on my numeric keypad does not work for this, only the 1 key atop my keyboard - the one just above and to the left of the Q key. I don't get that bink sound either, just nothing happens.

Did you use the same keyboard from your first machine when you installed FO3 on the other? Or, are your keyboards identical? If so, maybe you have some kind of non-standard keyboard that uses numeric keypad keys for the number keys. I am just guessing here, because i would expect the same ASCII code from either the keypad or the keyboard, but I see that the GECK does seem to differentiate them, so maybe that is it??? Have you tried using the 1 key on the numeric keypad instead of the keyboard 1 key?

Well I have tried a few things. First I did the step by step you listed, That is what I have been doing, But tried it any way. Nope!!! So yesterday I was in my shop, Fired up my computer and there it was, The GECK, It is my old one from the house. Any how the 1 key works. it has both wired mouse and key board. So I bring them in and try them on my one in the house, NOPE. so I take it back thinking what could be different. I go to C:/Docs and settings/Jesse(thats me)/MyDocs/My Games/Fallout3/GECKPrefs. At he bottom it says [MAIN] Then list a bunch of thing including bShowLightMarkers=0, bShowMarkers=1, bShowLights=1. So this got me to check out the other two that aren't working. The =0,=1, is different on all three. Here is the list. they are as follows Shop(the one that works) gameing then the Dell (work computer)

bShowNonCollisionObjects=1 1 1

bShowCollisionObjects=1 0 0

bShowSoundMarkers =1 1 0

bShowPortals =0 0 0

bShowOcclusionPlanes =0 0 0

bShowDynamics =1 1 0

bShowMultibounds =0 0 0

bShowActors =0 0 0

bShowStatics =1 1 0

bShowWater =1 1 0

bShowTerrain =1 1 1

bShowDoors =1 1 1

bShowActivators =1 1 1

bShowHelperObjects =1 1 1

bShowLightMarkers =0 1 0

bShowMarkers =1 0 0

bShowLights =1 1 1

So I changed the numbers that didn't match on the Dell to match the shop one and now the 1 key works. It's kinda funky, But it works. So I try it on my game computer and NOPE. So I'm thinking it's got to be some where in there. I'm not a "GURU OF THE GECK" but thats my theory. Also I tried the 1 key on my New Vegas GECK (Game computer) and it works fine. It ain't much but I think (Hope) it's a step in the right direction. If I wasn't so damn bullheaded I would have just said screw it by now, So I do apperciate the help. I just can't believe that I am the only one who has had this problem. Someone else out there has had to have this happen so there is an answer there.

I Uninstalled my fo3 GECK (Again). Then did a search on my C:Drive for anything GECK. Went thru and deleted any thing that was GECK (Except FONV) I did a "Disk Cleanup" And even a "Disk Defragment", And reinstalled the GECK from fallout.bethsoft.com, Did the GECK 1.5 update. Opened the GECK and did the walk thru I was given before, And the 1 key did not work. So I went to Edit, Render window hotkeys and the "H" was set (I did not set it) as the Show/Hide selected objects hot key and it works. So I'm NOT going to change it. And I think my theory about the numbers in the GECKPrefs was wrong. I checked it with it working and they are different then any of the three sets I listed above. I think this may just have to be one of those Mysteries that remain unsolved. Thanks again for all the help.
