Since UV Mapping is a weak area for many people (which requires training and LOTS of practice), here are some training videos...well, they at least let you see what can be done.

Check out a program called Bodypaint (Maxon Bodypaint is a sub-program within Maxon Cinema3d and Cinema4d). It allows you to paint directly on the surface of your model, skipping the photoshop stage altogether. It also allows projections and overlays of photographs or texture sources which is cool. (i would however reccomend photoshop for cleanup and some of the more precision tasks however)

Several other programs allow this functionality (painting on the model) such as DeepPaint or Photoshops new CS4 edition.... but Bodypaint does it best, and does it right.

NOTE: This program wont help you unwrap, but it will help you texture :) Takes away alot of headaches associated with texturing.

One cool thing is the shape of your brush changes depending on the stretch of your uvs for that region, so you can clearly see how uv stretching affects the texture formatting on your model. IE> if your uv coordinates are stretched extra tall for a polygon, your brush in Bodypaint will also be proportionally scaled really tall, because the pixels in this region are distorted accodring to the uv deformation.

ehh youll know what i mean when you try it out :)

I keep hearing about DeepPaint but I can't find a working download of it anywhere (this one was free IIRC). Where'd you get it, Skree?

Blender has a texture paint functionality and projection functions but they are not the easiest to use (texture paint is basically useless, spraying primary colors only). I have high hopes of using the decal projection for tattoos but again, that is not for beginners. :D
