These Meshes are NOT Up For Grabs!

I'm getting very sick of this.

Meshes from this mod keep turning up in other people's work for Robert's Male Bodies. The readme clearly states that they may not be used without permission. I especially would never give permission for their use in explicit or adult-targeted mods, which is where I have twice seen them turn up.

Some people have apparently gotten them from a retex mod of AlienSlof's, which is still no excuse because Slof's readme ALSO says to ask me for permission before using them.

Total disregard for the modder's feelings is one excellent way to bleed the community of talent. I would think we'd have learned this from Slof.

Do not use these meshes in any other mods, period. I will never again give permission for retexes of my work either, since people can't be bothered to read readmes of those.

The first time the offender voluntarily took the mods down. I'm waiting to hear back from the second one before I report him or her.

I guess the forum posts are in hopes that someone who doesn't bother reading readmes will notice them, or that such a person will think about reading readmes before snatching assets from mods without asking. (Not just mine.)

I don't see why retexes will change anything, aside from maybe making the meshes noticed by more people, and increasing the risk of someone using them without your permission through that.

If the author doesn't want their meshes retextured or re-released, it is the author's decision. That is simply the rights of the author, and people should be appreciative that the work is even being shared publicly. The fact that Sickle Yield is allowing people to contact her to get permission is more than fair. It is always a good idea to contact the authors of whatever resource you are using, just to let them know what you are using it for. Doing this not only makes sure that that content can be used as you want, but also lets the author know that their work is being appreciated and used by someone, so may be more inclined to do other work, or atleast contact that modder if any changes were needed.

The main issue here is not merely that work was being used without the author's permission, but also that the result is something that the author has very strong opinions against (rightfully so).

I meant that arbitrarily withholding permission for retexes doesn't seem to me that it would really decrease unfair usage, and that a retex being popular enough that some jerks will use it isn't necessarily something to avoid. I mean, by that line of reasoning, you would never need to worry about people stealing your work if you never uploaded anything. I don't see how sharing your work for projects you're okay with is that different than sharing your work all. I definitely agree about the importance of contacting people you want to use the work of.

Turns out to have been an honest mistake. The uploader apologized and said he'll correct it.

Exactly. Which decreases my incentive to share. Getting the maximum number of people to use my stuff is not my goal in modding (nor the goal of most modders).

Because there are things I specifically do not want done with my models. One of the things that first motivated me to learn modeling and texturing was that there was no armor that wasn't either bulky default or skimpy lingerie. I do not want to see things I've so carefully made ripped up and turned into the latter. I don't care what people do with their own time and talent and would not make them stop if I could. I just don't want them doing it with mine.

This is not an arbitrary decision. I have never yet let someone use something of mine without being sorry later, usually when it turns up in altered form in a sexually explicit screenshot on a public forum.

So refusing permission for a retex because someone else might, just like they might to your original, turn it into something sexually explicit later isn't arbitrary? Or am I totally misunderstanding "I will never again give permission for retexes of my work"?

I would have to agree with the sentiment on this one. If people aren't going to read your rules for altering or redistributing your mod, they aren't going to read the rules for those retextures which already exist. The problem here is not those people who read the rules, and abide by them, but instead those people who believe all things online are free to use, alter, and claim as their own. Any time you create rules which are aimed at preventing those people who don't respect rules, it's usually a losing situation. I can understand the outrage, I can understand insisting that people get your permission before using your things, I can understand insisting that permission from both people are to be gained before doing a retex of that permitted retex. But the people who are doing these things clearly aren't respectful of your wishes. Why punish those who might be? I'm sorry to say, but all this seems to be going in a bad direction, one which may end up causing another talented person to close up shop because of the actions of a few idiots.

Unfortunately, once something has been shared with others, be it music, text, graphics, or ideas, it can be used in ways that the original author did not intend, without the author's knowledge. The dilemma is that while shutting yourself off from sharing with others keeps your work safe, it also deprives those of your efforts who might enjoy and appreciate them. For those artists who are making something other than the usual, this is exceptionally true. We need alternatives to the skimpy fantasy armors that are out there. We have too many people who are confusing a RPG with a Porno.

Yea, That.
