Sunjah
I went to play Oblivion for the first time in about a year. This was Monday. It would not work. I had upgraded last year for Fallout 3 to a 8800 GTX nVidia card. Now Oblivion would only crash. Crash, crash, it would start, be at menu, and crash at load/new game, evertime. I moved files, reinstalled, put files back, slowly making sure it worked each time a few files were added. I have OBSE, OMod Manager, and many mods such as OOO, Open Better Cities, etc. It took me 3 1/2 days (literally) to get it to be just about there. Everything worked fine. Then I added in the "The Elder Council" mod, and somewhere something went so wrong it crashes now if I ever try to go to the iinventory. I don't think it was that mod, though. There was one about the music, and setting a timer for "restart of music," which I did so I would not get warning from music. There was also another mod, it was supposed to take quest item tag away when quest was finished. The reason I am suspect is the whole read me was in german, except at the end and it was very insulting, said something like "If you are stupit enough to mess up your stuff by now using my mod right, you deserve it," and also gave an e-mail address for hate mail. I translated it and most of it was instructions on use, so I tried it. I think it might be the music mod, because now I get no music at all, any time (save for movie scenes like the intro). Than menu has come up, I try to reset it by telling it to reset in 1 minute, but it never does. I am also suspicous of that german mod because the guy was such a jerk in his english statements. The symptoms I have now in game are that everyone's legs keep moving, even while standing still. Tab (for inventory) is instant Crash-to-Desktop. If I press forward, the controls seem to stick and he keeps walking forward. I have tried it with all mods off, all mods on, rebooted, everything, but it still does this. Before I rebooted, when I began a new game, the person's head was sideways, not straight on, and his arms were up like a cross. Since I rebooted, that doesn't happen anymore, but still no music and the unbelievable moving of legs (all people, emporer, guards, idiot across in cell, all legs constantly move even while standing still.) That game was working perfectly, I tested, tested and retested, and then just as I'm about to begin a new game, this happened. Also, as strange as it is, the joystick suddenly turned on. That is what made me think it was sabatoge by that idiot, or the music mod. I went to the .ini file, and sure enough joystick was = 1. I have never used a joystick with this game, ever. The "no music at main menu" leans me to think it is the music thing, but I am lost. I was just ready to play. Help me. Please. I can't take this. I know (KNOW) that smashing some key components of my computer right now would make me feel very good. Problem is, tomorrow I will hate myself. Any ideas? No into menu music, moving legs (???) and tab causes CTD.
Storm Raven
I think you've answered your own question, and this is why: You said, "It took me 3 1/2 days (literally) to get it to be just about there. Everything worked fine. Then I added in the "The Elder Council" mod, and somewhere something went so wrong it crashes now if I ever try to go to the iinventory." It is hard to interpret that any other way as being some kind of mod problem. It may be a mod load order problem, or it may be a corrupt mod, or it could be a mod compatibility issue. But if your machine was working fine, after having loaded several mods, and then you started to have problems, it's probably not your video card. And whatever the case, at this point, whatever the damage is, it is already been done. You could try, unloading all your mods, and starting a new game, but I get the feeling from some of the symptoms, you are describing, the chances are slim, that that will work. If it does, consider yourself lucky, load your mods, one at a time, restart the game, see if it works. Unfortunately, sooner or later, you're gonna load the mod that caused the problem. And then you have to start all over again. But at least you will know which mod, causes the problem. If it does not work, you'll probably have to uninstall and reinstall oblivion all over again, and that will include getting rid of the files in your save game folder. Before you start all of this, make sure you have copies of everything somewhere else, in another directory or folder. The problem with the files in your save game directory is that the INI files and other configuration files have probably been whacked also. Hope this helps, even if I already know, it wasn't what you wanted to hear... Good luck
Maigrets
Did you remove every single file that came with the mods you suspect of causing the problems? Have you installed mods that replace the default animations? As Stormraven says, you've answered your own question. If the problems started immediately after installing The Elder Council mod that is the likely cause. I've never used that particular mod so I can't comment on it's use. You didn't mention if you deleted your ini file from My Documents, where your saves are kept. If any mod alters the ini and you have problems nothing will change unless those edits are reversed. The music related one obviously changed something. Delete the ini and let the game generate a new one. Just don't touch the Oblivion Default ini in the game's own directory. This should not be altered. Otherwise, the best solution as mentioned is a reinstall. I know how long it takes with OOO, MMM, texture replacers etc etc believe me, but if you can't get it fixed any other way...... Install known mods first ie ones you're familiar with and have used before, then one at a time install new ones. If any cause problems like you describe make sure you remove all files that came with the mod, not just the esp. I upgraded my whole system for Fallout 3. But the drivers I used with FO3 would crash Oblivion every time with a driver error (V181.20). You could make sure you're using the latest drivers as well. I have the Nvidia 182.08 drivers and they run both games with no problems...yet.
Sunjah
First of all, thank you both very much for your comments. I know what you are saying about "The Elder Council" mod, but for some reason I don't think that is it. The weird "leg-moving all the time" thing and some other things (like forward and lateral movements getting stuck and not stopping until opposite key press) make me think it was something else. I was about to go through the process of doing the whole reinstall again. Then I cleared everything, went back to only the Oblivion.esm on my original install (which I still had, but renamed so I named it back), and the whole "leg-moving" and "stading like a cross" stuff disappeared. I then went back to the "re-install" (having re-named it, and then "original named it back), added most of the mods back using the MOD manager (and leaving out an OBSE extender and a few, like Elder Council, Music and the german guy's mod), and sure enough it worked. I am just going forward from here. It worked, and I am praying it works now. I did not know it was the .ini file in the "save" folder, so that explains why readjusting the default.ini was not working. I thought it might've corrupted the Obivion.esm or Oblivion.exe, but once I went back to the original install and stripped everything but the Oblivion.exe & .esm, it worked. Really freaky stuff. Thanks for the advice and help. Hopefully I'll be bak later with great stuff to report.
Sunjah
I do have a quick question (game seems to be working, by the way). On the in-game menu under video, it has an option for textures. Mine says medium. I want it high, but my game crashes everytime I quit, so it never takes hold (this was an old event so I am used to the crash on exit, affects nothing except changes made to, say, VIDEO like I want). Is there any other way to change this texture-medium to texture-high?

Or you could dl Deathless Aphrodite's mod that prevents the CTD on exit issue altogether.

bben46
Try this, Windom Earle_s Oblivion Crash Prevention System http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22282 It's still experimental, but it's getting high ratings. It's being updated often so if it doesn't fix all of your crashes check back in a few days. Note, it is not a mod and doesn't install like a mod, so be sure to read the instructions. Sunjah
Okay, I've got the game working, most mods are on. That whole thing that happened the other day was freaky. I now have those mods activated (except music, and I deleted the German guys stuff), and it works. Now I am suffering from 5 FPS. Obviously, this makes the game unplayable. When I used to play, I had virtually all of these mods as well and never suffered from anything like that. My machine is good, I have the latest drivers, I tweaked the *.ini file according to the "TweakGuide" settings, and I still get 5 FPS. I know I had done tests and things before (a year ago or so) and I would get 30 FPS on average, if memore serves. Any ideas of how to get more FPS or what could be causing this? Stuff like "no-anti aliasing" and textures to medium I know about. The only thing I am doing differently this time that I know for sure is that I have open & better cities. I have played with them before, though, and never suffered any kind of hit like this with FPS. I just usually didn't have them active at the same time, I do know. I played mostly with better cities before. Any help is well appreciated. 5 FPS is literally unplayable. I don't get it.

I happened to notice this while looking for another thread (necromancy anyone) Any way, Give this a try: Clean boot This will free up CPU processes, and often helps a laggy computer Good luck
