Unable to load random saves

Well, reporting this problem here is my last solution, and if I don't find a fix I'll just have to uninstall FONV, as much as I hate having to do so...

Thing is, ever since I started playing it in my new computer, I had a weird problem that I just swear I don't even know where it came from. I can play normally, without major problems, but randomly, when I try to load certain savegames, I get the black screen of death, I head a sound looping like a broken disc (for example, if I'm listening to "I don't want to set the world on fire" on the radio, I listen "I do-I do-I do-" all the time, and if there was no radio, ambient sound in loop). Nothing loads, I can't pause or quit and I have to close session to unlock my whole PC. It happens to some savegames, while in other savegames it works normally, and there doesn't seem to be any explanation at all.

 

Before posting this, I've searched around the internet, read several solutions, and nothing fixes this problem or prevents it from happening again. Before sharing the modlist, I'll explain a few fixes that just didn't work:

 

  • Loading from a previous savegame or starting a new game and then loading it doesn't work
  • Starting the game as an admin doesn't work
  • Any kind of Windows compatibility setting fixes nothing
  • Just starting a new savegame doesn't help, it happens eventually
  • I've used Stewie's Tweaks mod and used it's save manager to save very, VERY oftenly, because as I said before, it's kind of a random thing, and loading a previous savegame that does work was useful at first, but eventually ALL the savegames became corrupted, so not even backups help here...
  • You'll see in the load order that I play with TTW, New California and Star the Wandering Courier, which is a mod that makes them both playable at the same time. I can assure that is not the problem, as I've played Star the Wandering Courier several times before and this never happened
  • Just in case, I did try uninstalling New California and Star the Wandering Courier, but in normal TTW it happens aswell
  • My mod list is below 138, since the game starts glitching when surpassing that number
  • Any extra files you can download to prevent crashing or black screen doesn't have any effect
  • I did download TTW before modding any further, I know it requires a clean game

 

Having said that, I'll share my load order now, as if there is some particular mod that is known to cause this, I'd like to detect it and uninstall it. Thank you for taking your time reading this, I know requests like mine can be annoying

Of the top of my head, I can see one obvious weakness: You install Bounties. That line of mod has some minor incompatible with TTW and still no TTW patch. So the more you use them, the more likely it break a TTW game. Why? Because bounties use some f3 asset (scripts and all) that used by TTW. (it's why I dare not use any of said modder's works despite their high quality in my TTW runs)

 

BUT.

 

But you might try my workaround to load black save:

 

Let say you save in Mick Ralph shop in slot A and unable to reload it.

 

1. Now load a safe save, B. Go to Mick Ralph shop.

2. Press escape to get into menu screen. Press ~ to open up Console window

3. Click on Load button and load save A. This will load but you are in the frozen state of inside menu screen and console command

4. Press ~ to close console window. Press esc to get out of menu screen.

  • a. If it work, it work.
  • b. If it not work and frozen, redo steps until 3. DONT ~ just yet. You are now in the frozen state of inside menu screen and console command

5. Type coc FreesideFortInterior. This will teleport into a reasonable safe cell where there's no script running. This room is inside old mormon fort where Farkas go to sleep. It's not a must, just where I am reasonably sure no scrip running, and small. YOu can try other cell id if you know it's small, safe and no script running. In fact if this one freeze you can redo steps but coc into OTHER cells to see if work~

 

6.optional: Which after safely into the engine and load (step 5) reload the danger safe once again. This is because coc into different cells might break certain state of scripts and if you just keep going like that it lead to bugs in scripts failing to fire, so to speak. So you need to do the reload danger save one final time before you can start going normally.

I will definitely try a new savegame after uninstalling Bounties, thank you a lot for your help. The other solution may work as a temporal fix, but I'm afraid it won't prevent a new savegame being corrupted, so essentially won't help a longer term

But it work as temporary help for any mod in longer term. I've been using that for month.

 

The frozen state of black screen, in my experience, is the conflicting scripts (too many) and or graphic assets too complex (many corpses falling down, each corpse has many giblets) or weird vertical change, like you are obviously saving looking horizontally but the game load and I see that it's on higher plane or looking down, and then there's object blocking the downward movement of camera.

 

When you load into a safe save, the game seem to pre-read a few cache and map data so the conflicts are reduced, assets are pre-loaded. Which mean reload into danger safe can be pretty safe. When you coc into another safe cells, this reset the camera vector movement too. Which mean the only thing left is any conflict scripts, in which case you just redo steps many times and coc into different cells to see which will calm those conflict down~

 

It's nice to have stable saves but when you walk onto the path of many mods, black screen is unavoidable and this is a necessary procedure you need.
