Oblivion fails to run in Vista 64-bit...

I haven't played in about a year because my old PC got hit by lightning... Needless to say it's dead. Since then the thought of all the mods I need to download just to play the game has kept me from installing it on my new pc. Well I've finally worked up the patience to download everything and start over. Unfortunately the game won't even run. I've tried launching from the main exe, the launcher and the obse loader but I get the same thing every time. It starts to load and then just stops. No error message, no "The program has stopped responding", nothing at all. I've also tried setting compatibility on all 3 exe's to xp sp1 to no avail. I'm at my wit's end! I finally have a pc that can run oblivion with full graphics and the game won't start... If anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated.

DXDiag Stats:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Processor: Athlon Dual Core 4850e, ~2.5ghz

Memory: 3838MB Ram

Page File: 1967MB used, 5920MB available

DirectX: v10

Display: Nvidia GeForce 8200

Aprox total memory: 1904MB

Driver version: 7.15.0011.7824

Edit: I've also tried running as administrator, doesn't work. The graphics "card" is actually a chipset but it supports pixel shaders so it shouldn't be a problem. (I run Second Life on ultra graphics setting with no problem)

Ok.... well thanks for then links but they weren't very helpful. I've already tried everything mentioned on the site. I don't even understand the point of the pdf I downloaded. All it does is explain windows features and general computer terminology, I couldn't find anything in the table of contents relating to oblivion. On top of that it actually suggests I keep UAC ON?! NO! First thing I do when I set up a new pc is turn it off. UAC might be a viable security measure if you don't have security software but otherwise it's pointless and just plain annoying.

Things that site suggested:

make sure all drivers are up to date. check.

make sure game is up to date. check.

don't change UAC settings after game is installed. BIG check.

try running game as administrator. check. (side note: the option for this in the compatibility tab is grayed out, I simply right-clicked the icon and selected the option for it there.)

Ok, I officially feel stupid... Well I can't be too hard on myself, I haven't played in about a year. Anyways, the problem wasn't technical it was with my mods, or rather a mod I didn't have. I had the Dibella temple mod and the patch to make it compatible with UL-Entius Gorge (patch only available on Planet Elder Scrolls FYI) but I didn't download or install Entius Gorge itself. So problem solved... Thanks to OBMM for pointing out my stupidity!

Have you tried uninstalling oblivion and reinstalling it in C: Games? I had the same problem because of corrupt files, a "complete"

reinstall did the trick. A mod I had tried had corrupted my Oblivion ini files and they had to be replaced. I copied the files from a second PC with the game installed and e-mailed them to myself.

Oh and just because I can......Vista is a bloating hog of an opperating system.

Windows XP total operating system install requirements. 1.5GB

Windows Vista total operating system install requirements. 15GB
