HemmyLane52
I somehow got some sort of virus attached to my toolbar at the bottom right hand side of my computer screen- where it shows the time on your computer. The virus is in that little toolbar with an icon of a red X telling me every 5 seconds i have a security problem. I know it is obviously phony, im not even going to describe how phony it is.... I just want it gone.. every time i left or right click on it, it just takes me to a website i don't wanna go. Norton Antivirus isn't noticing that its a problem when i run virus scans.. anyone know how to remove this anoying thing?? Also, Superantivirus remover pogram seemed to help somewhat.. but the problem keeps coming back. Aside from all of the constant pop ups here is what the icon I was talking about http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/5591/58806411.jpg
LHammonds
Well, I do not like Norton Anti-Virus but many virus scanners do not catch what is known as "adware" I'd recommend removing Norton (if you can) and using Comodo or Avast (both are free). I would then follow it up with other tools to help protect you from future infections such as a firewall (like Comodo) and anti-malware (like Comodo and others). Tutorial (with links): How To Protect Your PC But, to solve your problem right now, I recommend Malwarebytes which will likely find and clean that nasty little bugger. Flamemonkey
Ah, I used to have this nasty little *censored*, until I installed Windows 7 as a new operating system. You know how I made it shut up? I forget the EXACT steps, but somewhere in the Control Panel, there's a spot for Notifications. Just set it to "Never show" or something like that. If that doesn't work, then they made a new strain since then. D: I'd be more specific, but unfortunately I haven't actually used Windows XP (I'm assuming that's what you're using) in a long time, so I don't remember it step by step. But basically you just tell it to never display, even if active. Of course I'm saying I never ACTUALLY removed it. I just made it stop doing stuff. The heck? B-u-g-g-e-r is censored? I'm pretty sure that's what I typed in there... o_O

LHammonds Thank you for the links LHammonds, this is most helpful because my main problem I was facing was where to go or what to download. Ah, I used to have this nasty little *censored*, until I installed Windows 7 as a new operating system. I keep getting pop ups that advertise the whole fake virus scanner- Didn't explain that clearly in the first post.
Flamemonkey
Oh...Well then, I can't say anything about the pop ups...I totally thought that was a different virus... My suggestion to you? STOP DOING PORN! Go overkill and install a new operating system. >_> Or just reinstall, depends on what you originally did. Most of your stuff, including Oblivion and probably Fallout 3, have nifty little registries that will help you keep all your stuff, assuming you know how to partition like, at all. (Or just have everything vastly important to you stored on a secondary HDD). Course, Vista/Windows 7 both put any files that they encounter while installing into an "Old" file, which is really just a folder. In short, if you need to install a new OS, lemme know. YES, IT IS OVERKILL. But who doesn't like a good excuse to milk mom/dad for Operating System money? And yeah, you can pretty much keep everything, unless you're re/installing XP, which unless I'm mistaken doesn't do the .old thing. TheTerminator2004
I had this problem once, it was very irritating, took me ages to figure out. I managed to fix it by using a neat piece of software called Autoruns. Just run the program, look through the list, and disable anything you dont recognise, or which shouldnt be there (if youre not sure, google it first!). Once youve figured out which file it is causing the popup, through trial and error, simply delete it, and voila! Problem solved.
Flamemonkey
Actually, you don't need a program for that.Windows Key (The button with the logo) + R, type in " msconfig " (No space or quotes), and then go to Startup panel.
LHammonds
This guys problem is not his OS and not porn. It is most like due to using Internet Explorer and browsing an infected site which exploits all kinds of vulnerabilities in IE (did I recommend Firefox?). The fact that his PC is obviously infected by one bad program makes me think there are 10 others on there he does not know about...hence his need to change virus protection and use of multiple antimalware programs. "upgrading" an infected operating system is about the worst advise to give without first resolving the infestation. LHammonds

Flamemonkey
I was kinda joking about the fact/oddity that many people get viruses going to porn... Not making an accusation. And it wasn't upgrading, it was installing. Just get out the important old files, and leave the rest to delete, if necessary. Like Oblivion, since it'd be a huge pain to completely reinstall that and lose all your mods. None of that "Upgrade" stuff. That way there's nothing in the registries, and unless your very important can't lose files are infected, you'll be relatively alright.(Though I dunno, even without an AV that I use constantly everyday or anything like that, I rather rarely get any viruses. About once every two months I'll run my computer through 2 or 3 full scans, but nothing really happens...There's been like, once that any of them have found a virus that I didn't know was there. I guess there could be more, but if there are, they aren't doing anything I don't like.)
