Fallout1 port to Fallout3 engine.

Is this in development? Because I think it has merit:

I've been thinking about it and you could manage it like this:

Step 1:

Make empty generic cells that represent each important town/vault/location, connect them via the main blank 'waste' cell.

Step 2:

Build all the items in the the game using vanilla fallout3 content. E.g. “9mm Mauser” using artwork from FO3:Chinese Pistol.

Step 3:

Each Cell at a time add the relevant items, and quest related actors (Name, Age, Gender, Race.)

Step 4.

Quests & Dialogue. Stating with the main quest add only quest related dialogue.

Step 5.

Add creatures/enemies (All of which exist or can be substituted with FO3 Enemies)

Step 6.

This would give you Fallout1 in a playable form for testing. Then you'd make it all look nice, add random dialogue and actors, specificity design Quest actors and items, add art work for weapons that can not be substituted for Fo3 content (Spear, Cattle Prod)

Clever scripting and the menu pop-up could replace the 'Use Item' game mechanic that features in Fo1.. (Things like giving a Dog some meat, or using a rope to get down a hole)

Lastly the massive task of building the waste land..

I think the main key would be to not try and add too much custom content at first.. Not get bogged down in the details.. For example the FO1 crow bar could just be the FO3 tire-iron.

You could attach it to the Fo3 world by adding a simulator to the Vault-Tec Headquarters, and have the player find the original Vault Dweller's pip-boy to download simulation data off.

Legal

as I know everyone will be all “you'll get sued!”:

Step1 - Do not call it 'Fallout1' maybe something like 'vault13' or 'waterChip', this way you aren't stepping on too many toes.

Step2 - Contact Bethesda, who as of 2007 own the IP for fallout (except for the MMO) and ask if there would be any problem making the project.

Step3 – Bethesda say 'YES' and the citizens rejoice.

Ok here a few steps I would suggest:

Step 1:

Open G.E.C.K.

Step 2:

Make a small Worldspace

Step 3:

Make NPCs, Dialogues and and a Quest for it

Step 4:

Add Creatures/Enemies for the Quest

Step 5:

Test it and make it a round small Mod

Step 6:

Release it

Step 7:

Think again about Fallout 1

People never learn. Its the same since Morrowind and Oblivion. Many Ideas, many air blowing.

It really starts to annoying me see big projects without sense and comprehension.

Wow, thanks for the enormously positive feed back. All your comments where so wonderfully helpful.

I really do think it's achievable, just have a look at the "Black Mesa Source" team, they've taken an epically large game and ported it to a new engine.

Lastly Is this in development? Is any already working on this? Because i'd like to help.

I wonder if this would be considered a violation of the EULA (like Morroblivion was)... something about converting content from game to game being a no-no, even if it's a game they own the rights to and it's on the same engine.

Might wanna double-check the EULA before you get heavy into this.

@Circuitous

You raise a good point, I've already sent an email to Bethesda and i'll see what comes from that.

The thing is, im not really considering using any art work / textures / music / sound effects from FO1, so that only thing you'd be redistributing would the the Story, Names and Text as a Mod for FO3.

I’m not saying this is impossible, (I’ve always been optimistic) but you’re not talking about creating a mod here. You’re talking about creating a whole game using the fallout engine. That is a HUGE project that would require a crapload of time, people, and effort, and for what, to recreate an old game? Why not use that time and effort to improve this game or even better, to create something new and refreshing? I wouldn’t mind lending a hand on a large project if I had the time, but it would have to be something that interests me. Recreating some old game (no matter how good that game was) doesn’t interest me half as much as creating a new experience for the players.
