GPU gets to 97+

I have a MSI R7970 Lightning GHz edition. I play Skyrim at 1080p with about 25+mods. I have the shadows on low, aa off, the textures on high. But my temps get to 97+ degrees. Thoughts? I cleaned the whole rig and I'm still getting the same temps.

97 celcius right? I was having somewhat of the same problem. I manually turned the fans up all the way and turned lighting and shadows off in game. Right now I run about 75-82 degrees from that alone. If that doesn't work I'd try cleaning your fans and getting an external one too

Really? I get 80 degrees on a HD 7990, ultra settings with an ENB. You might to check if your fans have failed on your GPU or that your readings are accurate. You should not be getting those temps running on low quality settings.

Doesn't afterburner show that? I have and EVGA card, so I use EVGA precision, but I think both are based on Riva tuner, so they should be pretty similar. You should be able to manually change the algorhytm of the fan, so that it reaches 100% more quickly.

You can also use software like speedfan, which will help you monitor and control all of your fans, not just your GPU fan.

Skyrim definitely pushes cards to their limits. I think you could find plenty of posts with people saying similar things about other games working fine for them.

You could try increasing your fan speeds, decreasing your graphics settings, especially things like AO and AA. Opening up your case may also help, of getting a high-quality case fan if you don't already have one.

On the other hand, if you have been using the stock thermal paste that came with your card, you may find that using new high-quality thermal paste improves your temps overall and increases the life of your card.

Edit: Just crossed my mind that it might be a graphics driver thing, maybe also try installing/reinstalling the latest drivers?
