TheSentinelSuperSpy
Hello everyone, I am having major crashing and freezing problems with my FNV. It seems to crash almost every 20-30 minutes and I cannot figure out why. Highwayman300
Does it just crashes randomly after 20-30 mins or when you do something?if its just randomly it could be a loading problem or that your computer/game cant handle all the mods. TheSentinelSuperSpy
99% of cases it crashes/freezes when loading a new area (exterior/interior) and fast-travel. I tried limiting the game to use only two cores (with the iNumHWThreads variable) but I didn't notice any improvement either. The game works fine, all the mods work fine, but then... Boom ! Another dreaded crash. It is really frustrating and immersion-breaking, even if I don't happen to lose progress when it happens, because I just saved before... I'm sorry if this comes across as a noob question, but could the 4GB loader reduce crashes, even if I have less than 4GB of RAM ? I thought I might give it a go if all else fails. Also, is everything OK with my load order or do I need to do some changes ? Edited October 4, 2013 by TheSentinelSuperSpy
Highwayman300
Have you tried looking for conflicts in FNedit in the mods that alter interiors/exteriors.
TheSentinelSuperSpy
I'll try that. You know, now that you mention it, the only mod that significantly alters exteriors is Nevada Skies. I'll see if disabling it fixes the problem. EDIT: The first results seem quite promising. I played for 70 minutes straight without a hitch and it only crashed afterwards because I tried to enter Liberty Loft (but that mod is quite prone to crashes, so it's understandable). It seems that Nevada Skies was the problem (probably some conflict with NVEC I guess, because NVEC also modifies daytime to be brighter, as I observed). Thanks for bringing up the idea about the mod, I didn't think that it might be the culprit at first! TheSentinelSuperSpy
It seems that definitely Nevada Skies was the problem. Now FNV crashes only after LONG playing times occasionally. I have one more question: Can I use the 4GB loader even if I don't have 4 GB of RAM? Will it work? Redbeard007
My personal view on the CTD issue with FNV Ultimate Edition which I am running now and the original release which I used until I completely re-installed only FNV Ultimate Edition just last week is the problem of listing exactly the same items multiples of times instead of just one listing with the number of the total of like items being held. When you look through your inventory after playing the game for several hours there are many listings of exactly the same item instead of the listing once with the total after for the number of copies of that item. If this were fixed then the major issue with the game trying to list all of those copies separately then IE ... CRASH! ... because it runs out of mapped memory the game uses that the final result is out-of-memory is CTD! This is my personal view and so far I have found nothing else that is game-wide-globally that uses so much of the available game mapped memory resource. Couple that with the number of hours played and again a multiple of some of the same items mentioned previously add more and more lines of 'forced' stored memory than most people have for game usage. I have 16 GB of top rated RAM in use today and I still get CTD because of the way the game is using the available resources.
TheSentinelSuperSpy
That's an interesting issue, Redbeard007; personally, I didn't notice this (maybe because I wasn't playing for long intervals). However, I completely agree that if there is one thing the game desperately needs, it's RAM, and LOTS of it. I just activated the 3GB switch on my Windows Vista (it's a 32bit system) and I could already notice an improvement in terms of crashing, namely the Liberty Loft mod doesn't crash anymore when it loads, which is significant. So, to sum up, this is THE major problem with FNV. Having more RAM helps getting a smooth game and reduces the nasty CTDs.
