Unless AMD pulls out a good Linux driver by the time this thing gets released, that Steam Machine will pretty much be a laughing stock. judging by the stance optimized for linux only. i'm guessing with that statement mantle is a no go???Dude, Mantle is cross-platform... :ermm:

Thor.
I know that, I'm covering the fact its been dismantled as being the number one choice for developers, especially when Microsoft wants to keep its api as the leading platform. http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/168671-xbox-one-will-not-support-amds-mantle-and-ps4-is-also-unlikely-is-mantle-doa

It easy to implement and works on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, Eidos have just signed up to it as well.
Thor.
I know but he did have one point, there is competition between api's and thats obvious thing, if mantle wants to be noticed, they better bring forward something more than just frostbite. Only until then we would some real competition. Edited November 29, 2013 by Thor.

Thor.
i have very low expectations for mantle to go mainstream just yet, i have yet to see other developers use Mantle other than EA, which defeats the purpose sense i refuse to use Origin. its a good thing nvidia is all over it at least, still its closed api when dx is a little more open source in comparison. So is opengl open source, that might be a drawback. Which would you use, a free api or something developers have to pay for. Directx isn't completely open source, but they do have tools for developers that are free. Edited November 30, 2013 by Thor.

Also DirectX isn't even remotely open source. If mantle allows lower spec machines to run their games then devs will be all over it, it widens the potential number of customers and thus potential sales. Thor.
There is a cost to mantle's api before developers could use t in there games. http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2955065216191175624/

Now, that thread you linked doesn't say Matle costs money, the guy mentions a concern that the game developers might feel like DX takes less money and time to make a game using it, likely due to the fact that programmers are already familiar with DX and switching currently existing software to a different API might be cost-ineffective and take time. He was referring to BF4 switching to a different API while the game has already been released.
