Thor.
Sigh i just am very skeptical about mantle, i have to see some hard numbers before i am convinced that it will take off, i doubt Companies like Microsoft will use it with open arms considering they already have a api. I'm looking to hard to find other reasons why it might fail, Why i am thinking like this i don't know, maybe its a gut feeling that monopolistic api might be the end of competition or slow innovation, i don't know??? Edited November 30, 2013 by Thor. Werne
I'm looking to hard to find other reasons why it might fail, Why i am thinking like this i don't know, maybe its a gut feeling that monopolies api might be the end of competition or slow innovation. To be honest, I can see DX failing before Mantle does. Developers are looking more and more into cross-platform functionality (mobile platforms, console systems, other desktop platforms), OpenGL is still a widely used cross-platform API only because it's one of the rare ones, even though it's becoming sort of an oldtimer compared to DX. If Mantle does the job right (and we'll see once BF4 Mantle support comes out), DX will likely be steamrolled because it's a Windows-only API. JimboUK
The Creator of Star Citizen talks about Mantle here https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/76653/star-citizen-pc-ps4-and-consoles he seems impressed. The only platforms M$ can stop it being used on are the Xbox and Winmo, they won't want to fall even further behind with the former and no one much cares about the latter. If Mantle does what it supposed to do then devs would be crazy to stick with DX, they'll be limiting themselves for no good reason. According to Nixxes, the company that specialises in porting to the PC Mantle has an 8% API overhead while DX11 has 40%, that's quite a difference and Mantle is still in its infancy.
