This is funny.....to me anyways

Somali pirates attack wrong ship

NATO forces capture pirates who attacked a German naval supply ship thinking it was a commercial vessel

Heres the link to the story http://media.watoday.com.au/somali-pirates...hip-444710.html

I bet the pirates crap in their pants when the germans return fire and called in war ships for support.

I think they should show leniency.

Confiscate the weapons and boat and let the poor guy walk home.

If only these guys would play fair and fly the Jolly Roger.

There are thousands of square miles of ocean involved, and many hundreds of fishing boats going about their lawful business. How can that be effectively patrolled? How do you know who the pirates are until they strike?

No meaningful government in Somalia means nobody to put pressure on to stop this (it's a Libertarian's paradise ).

If you're going to put armed guards on every single merchant vessel, who is going to pay for that (PureSnipe's the only poster to mention costs thus far)? The shipping company? Why would they if they know that statistically the chance of any particular vessel being captured is very small, and if it does get captured they can just buy it back by paying the ransom? Arm the crew? They're just merchant seamen -- they didn't sign up to be soldiers.

Finally, nobody here is going to come up with any ideas that haven't already been thought of and dismissed as either unworkable or not cost-effective by people better placed to put them into practice.

Apply the same logic that says you don't shoot an intruder unless they are INSIDE your house.

Once they have boarded, there is no question of their intent.

As reported by CNN both the hostage captain and his father teach courses in anti piracy at a maritime college so in effect, they and anyone they taught did sign up for this.

Cost? Good point. Anyway, whats a little terror between friends.

And if we weren't discussing this here, you wouldn't have got to take such a well played stab at Libertarians.

I think Anarchists would have been better but that's just my opinion.

Actually I do have a couple good ideas but I'm not about to post them till I've secured a patent.

Yup. Money grubbing capitalist.

It's been a bad week for the pirates. 3 killed 1 captured by US Navy. 3 killed, one civilian dead by French Navy. A boat load captured by German Navy when they attacked a German Navel supply ship by mistake. Note to pirates, If its painted Navy Grey and has a big number painted on instead of a name, And there are some structures that look kind of like guns on the deck, It's probably not a good idea to try them on. But, there are lots more poor Somalis that want to get rich quick. And a dozen local warlords who will front them a boat and some weapons.

Haha. Yes. It doesn't take brains to be a criminal, just a successful one.

And crime does pay. it's the retirement that sucks.

I don't know if this is really viable as a Pirate defense, but maybe we could just have all ships in the area include lots and lots of herring in their cargo???

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/stor...5006003,00.html

From the Report:

"China Radio International reported the Chinese merchant ships escorted by a China's fleet sailed on the Gulf of Aden when they met some suspected pirate ships. Thousands of dolphins suddenly leaped out of water between pirates and merchants when the pirate ships headed for the China's."

regarding that german vessel... germanies navy uses alot of civilian ships for cargo transports and even the military ones often cruise under other flags than our own for example the liberian one to save costs (as hillarious as that may sound)

then there is the point that its absolutely impossible to stop dem pirates from looting the lanes due to the fact that our navies only have so many ships to spare and there is an actual warning which tells sailors not to travel through this waters, yet they do so out of greed to get to their destination faster...

but lets face it, WE are the reason these people became pirates in the first place anyway... africa is such a screwed continent, torn by war, extortion, slavery, hunger and so on... and for example the EU russia and china are clearing all the waters round it from the little fish thats left with their super hightech fishing fleets...

thats just one reason for the poverty in that place... many more are there if one just opens his/her eyes

- mining, warlords, oil, fish, slaves, whatever... we take it, use guns4hire to control them, and leave the people there to their destiny which means: desertification of the landscape, draughts, poisoned environments, out of control warlords and so on... just ask texaco how many mercs they have on their pay rolls in africa...

well i happen to have friends from that region who had the choice: starve, flee to europe or become criminals of some kind...

since we send back most of those that survive the perilous journey and starving is not really a good option many become criminals of course... ask yourself what you would do?

i find it kinda hypocrite to come around now and tell these people to starve as we dont want these evil dirty blacks to bother our lovely tourists or live in our shiny countries... sure, the mighty military is a great solution to that problem, im asking myself how many people turn pirate for every pirate killed...

these guys aint the robin hood type of pirate, true, but lol... are we? we rob the world and dont give to the poor either... no instead we take from the poor even more and then we blame em for taking what they need...

(and dont come with the WTO and IMF now... they dont help anyone but themselves)

stupid...

---------

@bean

that hering idea wont work as there are nearly no herings left... as arent many fishies at all... by 2050 the seas of our planet will have reached a point where no commercial fishing will be possible anymore and as a hobby fisherman myself i can onyl approve of the fact that the seas are empty... zero, nada... no fish...

Well I really hope your drunk or something. If you believe that nonsense you just spouted off I feel sorry for you. At a certain point people have to take responsibility for their own country. Far as I am concerned any pirate should be hung by the neck until dead.

I am all for Nato actually doing something by carpet bombing any harbor that launches pirates. Mixed in with some infrastructure building, and disolving that bloody country the world might be a better place :P
