A New Modder

To All Experienced Modders,

I came up with a mod concept and wish to attempt to create it. I know nothing about modding but, I am computer savvy and teach myself (or read and let someone else teach me) everything I know. I've done some skinning of Windows GUI, put together a few web pages and was addicted to making skins for Rainlender for awhile. So I know I can figure out the modding thing. What I would really appreciate some pointers. Where to start, what not to do, that sort of thing. I can tell you that the mod I wish to create is probably bold for a newbie, it would require adding a space to a building without an interior, a navmesh because NPCs need to function inside said space, the incorporation of two existing mods, dialog for interaction with player character. Eventually, I envision a repeatable quest. This particular building is not used for anything throughout the game.

So, with that in mind, where would you all suggest I start? I have the G.E.C.K., used it to peruse others mods, but that's it. I feel I would be better off learning this from those that know, rather than just trying to figure it out. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Wish me luck! When I am finished with this post I will go and take the Vault tutorial and get back to you all. Thanks again.

The Vault tutorial is a good place to start - you'll learn a lot about editing cells in that tutorial. You can check the stickied thread at the top of this forum for some more good links.

Here are a couple of useful resources:

- List of GECK Video tutorials on YouTube

- GECK Wiki

- Tutorials on the GECK Wiki

Best of luck!

I will check those out thanks. I was just messing with the geck and found the area that hols the building. Is seems to me that I would need to edit the outside world as well as give it an interior. The building is present in more than one outside world space. So far it seems like quite a bit to figure out. Gives me a bit more respect for the moddders out there. I was looking at the outside Penn Ave area in the 3D viewer and was confounded by the mess I saw. Red blocks, green sections, LOL. I guess all will be explained as I go.

Save A LOT! The GECK does strange things sometimes.

I've noticed. It crashes quite often when I'm browsing for objects. I'm getting it though. I've already bypassed the tutorial and have started putting together what may eventually be the interior of my mod. It seems to take a good amount of searching to find the right "pieces". A lack of understanding of the whole process will slow me down a bit. I'm having trouble figuring out how to put my new cell in the game to test it. I need to check the lighting... I have a designated location. Do I need to alter the outside cell to have a portal to the interior cell or add it to the newly created interior cell and snap it into the outside cell? The building has no exterior doors. Still confused on that part. I am making an interior for a building that didn't have one, and as of yet have not put anything in game. I would like to s I can check my progress. It is hard to determine how things will look outside of game-play. It doesn't seem to difficult to do but, lots of time and understanding to do right. I want to make a high quality product so I'll take it slow. This particular idea will require allot of stuff. A new interior and navmesh, new NPCs with dialogue, the incorporation of two separate "currency" mods, and eventually a new game-play addition and repeatable quest/quests. I would love to get a partner, if you know anyone who would like to tinker around, PM me.

If you'd read more of the tutorial you'd know that you can use "coc areaname" to teleport to your area.

I really recommend following the tutorial steps, even if you're building an office instead of a vault, the "steps" are the same.

Thanks for the tip. I am going back and forth between the geck and the tutorials, getting there.
