Hi,

right now I am facing some problems with the mods I want to use. Since I am very stubborn and I really do not want to miss them, I am looking for a solution. Hopefully you can help me here. ^^

First of all I am using the german (patched) version of the Direct 2 Drive Oblivion Download. On some mod descriptions (OBSE for example) I found remarks that they are not compatible to my version of Oblivion.

Is my version a general problem when it comes to mods and modding?

Is there a possibility to see exactly what an esp file does?

On some mod problems I encountered the problem in the first place was the language difference. So it would be nice, if I can just translate the esp file like the Modder Halimand did with the Unofficial Oblivion Patch ( http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22520 ).

To do that I would need to know what the mod changed in the first place. Oddly some mod still work without the esp file. Male Body Replacer V4 by Robert ( http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14942 ) for example. Knowing what this esp file did would help me. Because I don't want my game to crash later.

Is it okay for my personal use to translate or alter a mod?

:thanks: for reading the wall of text. Hope you can help me soon. ^^°

The reason the D2D version causes problems is its protection, which is different from the standard Oblivion on a disk. As far as I know, OBSE will not work with D2D, and the authors have no plans to make it work. As OBSE is required for many mods this can be a serious problem.

As for your own use, you can do anything you like. As long as you do not upload anything that includes copyrighted or restricted materials for others to use.

It would be nice if every mod came in every language, but that is not going to happen until we have a universal translator program that actually works. Many will work in other language versions, but with parts in the other language. I used the original German version of one mod before an English translation was available with no problems.

The file encryption, which is used with the D2D version is the cause of the problems with the OBSE, and decrypting it would be a breach of law, however I don't see any other problems coming from that, apart from you just not being able to play any mods that require OBSE.

The translation business is just like bben said, although you can upload your translated version of it, if you get permission from the original author. There are already lots of german translated mods there, generally with "DV" in the name, so just putting "DV" in the search will bring you a lot of german translated mods.(Not all results will be german versions, but many.)

I use the D2D version myself. Its a pain not being able to try out some of the more radical mods which really make some drastic changes like Deadly Reflex, the mods that add wings and let you fly, scripted additions for entire rebuilds of vampires, adding werewolves etc etc. But there are a lot of mods on this site that don't require it and have allowed me many richly rewarding additions to the game.

Okay, thank you for your answers. Still I want to know if there is a possibility to see what an .esp exactley changes? So it could be redone in another language. :)

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but this is what I do when I'm merging armor mods into my one large armor .esp file. (Dislaimer, the file I'm describing is just a personal project and not for release.) In order to see the contents of the file I am adding to the main file I'll go to open and bring up the menu to select an .esp. I pick one and hit "details" and it tells me what's been altered within the file. In the example pictured, you can see several things listed under ARMOR, so if I open this file and go into the armor listing I can edit the information about the armor in the esp file.

It may seem odd at first that the body replacer does not require an esp.

It is quite simple actually. The body replacer replaces all of the character bodies

in the game.

The way this works is. When Oblivion is launched the game engine first reads the

BSA files. It then amends these by reading the Data files. This is where your mods

are stored. Both replacer and esp mods.

The reason for the esp is so you can make a mod that adds something specific to the

game without replacing the vanilla version completly. ie. - You can add a new glass

armour without getting rid of the vanilla glass amour.

This is why race mods require esp's. They will often add new body textures that are specific

to that race.

The esp points to your mods folders/files.
