AncientGamer65
So....I just got a better gaming computer with an SSD. I hear that loading times, freezes and a bunch of things are lessened if not eliminated by moving from an HHD to an SSD. I'm on board, but need to know what to move to the solid state drive. Is it just the DATA folder, or do I need to move over other folders as well? I know where to change Nexus Mod Manager (not doing Vortex...I need to adjust my load order myself) to get it to see the files again, but want to be sure I'm moving everything. Do I also need to mess with the "Virtual Instal" files? Bottom line it for me folks...what needs to be moved to the SSD? Thanks for any and all help! StormWolf01
Heyas AG :)You will want to move over the entire Fallout 4 folder. Not just the data folder. You can literally put it anywhere on the new drive that you want to, even root directory, and the game will play just fine, as long as you update your desktop shortcuts from the new location. I do not however, recommend putting them too far down into a folder directory. For example, everything of mine is copied over to a folder on the root directory named "FO4 CBBE" You don't have to follow the entire file path, that was set up from the Steam install. One thing to mention tho, is that in a lot of cases, while they do have a much faster read speed than a HDD, many SSD's have a slower write speed. So for large amount of file transfers, especially lots of Big files, I don't trust windows' Copy and Paste to do the job.I use a free prog called Fast Copy https://fastcopy.jp to do it with. It's a really easy program to use, in cases like this. You simply select your Source as the game folder. Then the Destination as the new folder that you created on the new drive. The limitation on it tho, is that it can only handle one queue at a time. And there's a couple of other folders you also need to move. But, those are small, and can easily be handled by windows, once you get the big cluster copied over. You need to copy over your savegames from your My Documents/Fallout 4 folder. You also need to copy over "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Fallout4\" as that has the file in it, called Plugins.txt which is where the game stores the list of your load order. "YourUserName" will be whatever name is on your screen when you go to enter your password to start up the computer. As for NMM. I've been doing mods manually for a couple of years now, so I'm afraid that I do not remember the file directory of what needs to be done with it :( I'm sorry :( Remember to update your desktop shortcuts tho. Easiest way is to just delete the existing ones, and then Copy the .exe files from the new install, and then right click on your desktop and choose Paste Shortcut. Also, if you're not doing so already, you will now need to either start the game thru F4SE, or thru NMM. Steam won't recognize the new location, I don't think. Hope this helps and big congrats on getting the new computer! :D
