Absurd slowdowns on foggy days

The title says it all. Short story long, Oblivion has been performing well on my PC. Bit of jerkiness when loading new areas, but nothing too noticeable. On clear days, that is. When the weather gets foggy, I my framerate is practically halved. Absurd because it isn't even raining and I can barely see anything through the fog, anyway. It's pretty much a darker sky with the LOD turned down. How could this be worse on the framerate? Anybody else experienced this issue and can offer some advice?

EDIT: This isn't only an outdoor problem. Cities are affected, too, though not nearly as bad.

UPDATE: Just terrible on rainy days. I supposed I could just force the weather back to being clear in the console if it gets too much,

its because vista has so many side processes that are running that 2 gigs on vista cant run crap. Meanwhile, 2 gigs running on XP is fine because XP doesnt have all that crap running in the background.

The good news is you can use this command as a temporary solution, it will force the weather to be anything you chose, here it is

fw (id) <---The ID is the numbers below, do not include the () or the * when you type it in.

* 370CE - Paradise

* 38EEC - overcast

* 38EED - snowing

* 38EEE - clear

* 38EEF - foggy

* 38EF0 - cloudy

* 38EF1 - thunderstorm

* 38EF2 - raining

* 836D5 - oblivion sky

Sakura's suggestion will work, but I think there's a weather-changing spell mod if you want to retain immersion..

Vista is a pain. I just got a new laptop with it pre-installed. Don't like it. Bloatware. Fortunately my Oblivion is on a desktop running XP, and will stay there..

Adding memory will help, but be advised that 32 bit OS can only use 3.2 GB of RAM.

You may be having more problems with background processes, a useful tool for testing is:.

A Clean boot (a totally reversible process) can help by clearing all unneeded processes, then test the game.

If the game now runs better, you can use task manager to locate offending processes.

What's ideal is to reduce "used page file" size to something like 700 to 900 MB

You can find this value by running "dxdiag"

IDK if linux can run oblivion, i never tried, but i dont see why not.

If you have another hard drive (best way to do it) install this very VERY small operating system and install a duel-boot program. restart the computer, and choose to book with linux. Arrange everything how you like it, and then play oblivion. VERY VERY little background programs being run, practically no bloat.
