Paarthurnax - Do I have a choice here?

Okay, I had to talk to Esbern to learn the the Words to call the Dragon. Unfortunately, he told me I have to kill Paarthurnax, which I was trying to avoid. That being said, can I use the Console to remove the quest, or do I have a choice to NOT kill him?

Killing Paarthurnax is optional. Call Dragon on the other hand is required to finish the main quest, so you should get it regardless if you kill him or not. Going through with it just gives you the Dragon Infusion perk and the ability to recruit Blades.

I was kinda fond of the old lizard and got along well with the Greybeards, plus I and didn't really care about the Blades and Delphine kinda pissed me off, so I never bothered with that quest.

Actually you can recruit blades, have them fight a dragon once and get the dragon infusion perk without killing Paarturnax and without mods.

- You can start recruiting right after you discover Sky Haven temple, and the blades wont complain about Paarthurnax untill you fight Alduin for the first time.

So you get a window of oportunity to do it all between those two events. But like I said, you only get them to kill a dragon with them once, though that isn't much of a problem in a game where you get dragons to slay all the time anyway.

Paarthunax>>Delphine and Esbern. Those are just two old coots too hung up on their old ways of "Blades must kill dragons" but they don't have any real ability to do so. The Blades haven't had a battle with dragons on their own in ages, and its not as if any recruit they make has a chance against them in my game (I have Dragon Combat Overhaul and Deadly Dragons :p). Plus I think they think of themselves too highly. In my opinion, the Blades started out probably as Tiber Septim's hunting buddies for Dragon Souls and they just got haughty over the years as they became the Imperial bodyguard.

Paarthunax on the other hand spent the past ages teaching the Voice to humans and is at peace. He is also a wise old dragon who's a better mentor than either old Blade. The Blades can disappear from the face of Tamriel IMO. Plus I think Tiber Septim met him and didn't kill him. Just let me have a copy of DragonBane and their Armor for my armor display/museum/rogue gallery.

i wonder what all that parthurnax-problem is about. i played through the game like 3 - 4 times and never got that quest to kill him. then again, i always finished civil war before i was so far in the main quest (so no peace treaty) and OF COURSE I NEVER TOLD ESBERN THAT PARTHURNAX WOULD BE A DRAGON!! ... i find him to cute, nice and fluffy for that

so if esbern doesnt know, he cant ask me to kill him, because, well, he doesnt know.

aint i right that you gotta speak to esbern about parthurnax before he comes up with that "go kill him" stuff???

If you talk to Esbern after the main quest in order to rebuild the Blades, he'll ask you to kill Paarthunax first.
