exanimis
I recently downloaded a new mod and was heading into the IC from Weye. My game crashed on the way across the bridge. I then fast traveled into the IC and used the load door to exit the IC to try and cross the bridge that way. The game crashed while exiting the door. I only had the new esp and the purse of wonders installed. I try to keep my game "clean so that I can make sure my mods don't end up dependent on any others. I tried disabling those two mods and got the same crash, the warning pop up only states that Oblivion has experienced a problem. Will re installing Oblivion fix the problem? I don't run many mods but my list of mods is about twenty esp's long. All the other esp's are test esp's for the mods and the ideas that I am working on. I enable only one at a time for testing so I can't really understand what it causing the crash.
exanimis
Also, I recently ran into a problem while adding a terrain esp to a large world esm. The warning said that I have run out of virtual space. Does that have anything to do with the crash?
Qwaxalot
Also, I recently ran into a problem while adding a terrain esp to a large world esm. The warning said that I have run out of virtual space. Does that have anything to do with the crash? Both of your posts are probably related to the same thing. Windows is running out of "virtual" memory. Either free up space by getting rid of background processes A Clean boot (a totally reversible process) can help by clearing all unneeded processes, then test the game. If the game now runs better, you can use task manager to locate offending processes. You can also increase page file size (Microsoft recommends ~ 1.5 x RAM) To learn more, invoke OS help and search for "virtual space"
exanimis
Thanks for the info and the link. I've been searching for info on Virtual memory but haven't found much. I guess you have to expect these problems on a PC that's four years old.
bben46
Virtual memory is also called a page file. To set it in XP: Start>Control panel>System>Performance>Settings>Advanced Default is usually set to 1.5 times Ram unless you are short of hard drive space. If you are having a problem, try increasing the virtual memory to 2x or 3x the RAM. Remember this takes up Hard drive space. If you have more than one physical hard drive, put the virtual memory on the one that does not run Oblivion for the best performance.
exanimis
Thank you bben, I'll try that too. At the moment I'm taking a break from all the heavy thinking and just playing around in blender. We all need a break now and then.
exanimis
OK, so I doubled my virtual memory. I started a new game and did the training caves thing. when I exited the sewers, I fast traveled to the IC and ran around a while to test it. The game worked fine. I then tried exiting the IC where the bridge is and the game crashed while going through the load door. I tried exiting the IC at the door to the Arcane University that door worked but my game crashes before I can cross that bridge or go anywhere else. Last night I opened "Add/Remove Programs and removed a dozen programs I no longer use, including AOL. I ran all my utilities, registry cleaners, anti virus and spyware removers. The game still crashed even though my PC has picked up a little speed. As I type this I am defragging my C: drive after testing the game and having it crash again. The defrag always takes hours but when it's finished, I'll try the game again. I guess the next step will be to totally remove Oblivion and try a re install. exanimis
Crap! the defragmenting is done and the game still crashes. Time for a new install. Dang!
exanimis
Ok a new clean re install did the trick. I can now play the game as well as go ingame to test my meshes.textures and collision. The thing that bothers me is that I still don't know what caused the problem in the first place.

All you have to have to make those kinds of things happen is a temporary memory glitch, corruption in one of the files, sector errors, anything. Even with all the error correction techniques, it still sometimes, although rarely, happens. Just out of curiosity, did you happen to run disk cleanup before the defrag?
