Oruboris
I'm borderline bored with the main questline. I have the GOTY edition, including SI, but haven't entered the mysterious door yet. I figured it was intended to be played after the main line, since it was released afterwards, but is there a reason to wait? For those who've played both all the way through more than once, what order do you like best? My general play style-- I usually work on all the guild stuff simultaneously, but this time I've let the DB quests wait till I have the gray cowl-- I generally like the extra variety of that sort of approach. Currently head of thieves and K9s, nearly there with arena, mages and fighters, and am gathering the stuff Martin wants to get the amulet back. dezdimona
play it whenever, the main quest can be completed at any time or even never completed if you choose to do so
Crimsanity
I started playing it when I became bored with the main quest, which was in the middle of recruiting soldiers for Bruma's defense. With my next character, I'll probably skip the main quest entirely and go straight to SI. I just find the main quest incredibly lackluster and tedious after a while. Agree with Dez, skip to it whenever you want. I did when I just couldn't resist my curiosity anymore.
SpacemanSpIiff
wait till lvl 23, that way you can have perfect madness/amber stuff crafted for you.
XanAlderon
I went to the isles the moment I started te game, it wouldn't let me in at first but I kept trying and I was let through.
Deepblue686
I prefer to try and do it at a high level, but then I can't wait any longer and jump through that portal :P
Johny Obliv
I went to the isles before completing the main quest, because i wanted the armor and weapons from the isles to make the main quest easier. And the shivering isles quests are much more fun then the Regular quests.
Halororor
I go to SI whenever I feel like a laugh. Which means whenever the MQ get's boring(sometime around the Miscarcand quest).
Eshenaleros
The MQ is pretty epic... but not after seven playthroughs. generally I take a new character to each of the different areas - thus, I have a mage, a fighter, a thief, an assassin, and a spellsword (he's going through the SI quests right now. I'm not even bothering with the main quest with any of these guys)
darkjaffar
I, only a few weeks ago, beat the main quest for the first time. And I have had this game for ages: On the XBox360 I had a female high elf that was somewhere around level 20, and completed the dark brotherhood, mages guild, arena, some fighter's guild and thief's guild and several side quests. Never the main quest. had nearly 100 hours for her. I had a few characters, like my Nord, but they didn't get very far, not completing the fighters guild. I got it for PC so I could run mods as I got bored and completely forgot a main quest even existed and created characters, typically male Nord and a female High Elf, as if to recreate my 360 characters. I got probably 50 hours in with them, the female completed the mages guild (again) but didn't get anywhere really. I got a new computer and discarded them with it. This time around I am quite a few mods, including OOO and some leveling mods. This time my male Nord character is my favorite as I got bored with the magic characters after 150 hours of them. He also has a bit of an "in character" thing, so as a paladin-like character, he doesn't do dark brotherhood or thief's guild and such and is the first character of mine to get a fame > 100 (though my XBox high elf was close). He is the first character I did the figher's guild with and he has arcane university access, but he doesn't use much magic. He completed knights of the nine, owns a house in nearly every city, only a little of SI and was the first character I completed the main quest with (which was spoiled a little for me as it took me so long to get around to it, but even then, it was still more epic than I thought it would be). I did it at around 120 hours or so in with this character (a lot of random exploring of OOO with this guy). So there you go. Roughly 270 hours and several characters later (some not mentioned) and I just got around to beating that. I should probably beat SI before that is spoiled for me too. =( He could easily do it as OOO didn't mess with SI, making it a cakewalk... I should warn though, that completing the main quest early will end the Oblivion threat early, obviously. As in, you won't be able to get high leveled sigil stones without mods. This is probably one of the factors that at first made me delay the main quest, until I realized there were mods that made it so gates didn't close after the threat is finished.
