Trouble with GECK [Fail to load on Startup]

Hi,

I left Skyrim to play FNV and i decided that i want to mod that game as well. So i downloaded GECK but it fail to load on startup.

After a few research on google, peoples said that i need to look under MyDocuments\MyGames\FalloutNV and then editting a certain GECKCUSTOM.INI with this line: From bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=0 to 1, so GECK can load multiples master files at once. But that specific GECKCUSTOM.INI is nowhere to be found and Bethesda on their website said that i would found it on MyDocuments\MyGames\Fallout3. And yet i recall that for skyrim it was SkyrimEditor.INI which is located where you installed your game: \Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim

But i dont own FO3 and i cant load GECK because i cant find that .INI on mygames folder even on Read-only or Administrator

Thx in advance

Yes my version is 1.4 and i just launch it, wait until it crash then i go to mygame folder and there's still only a GECKprefs.ini and no GECKcustom.ini =S

EDIT: YES!! i did it.

upon launching the program for the first time, I didnt know i have to click/spam on the close window buttom to prevent it crash. That will create the GECKcustom.ini

Is UAC interferring? As I recall one ini is installed with the program the other is generated on the first run. Could be wrong as it has been a while.

Also suggest uninstalling/deleting it all, rebooting and re-installing (with UAC disabled).

No apparently, all i have to do was to close GECK before it crash. That move will automatically create the GECKcustom.ini

Well after adding bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=0 to 1 to GECKcustom.ini it still crash on startup =/

I bought Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition. It add all the dlcs within the game and there's alot of master files should i, instead of 1, set it to like 10?

Any idea ?

I too bought the ultimate edition. I use the copy of the GECK that jazzisparis linked to. My theory on what masters to include is only include the ones you NEED. But GECK will load with quite a few masters enabled.

The way to trouble shoot this is to play that old Sesame Street troubleshooting method.

If what works on most systems but not on yours, what is different on yours?

Sadly no one is going to be able to read their crystal ball and see what thing is different on your system from working systems, but rest assured something on your PC is different. Isolate that and things will work. Don't bother saying what other things do or do not work since you are not trying to solve for those programs.

Check your PC

patch your PC

virus scan your PC

scrub all the temp file folders

clean the GECK off your PC, re-DL and re-install.

try to check your install with steam (validate the files)

That fails, scrub FNV off your system and re-install that.

Do you have all the dependencies installed? .net framework? directX?

Are you an ADMIN on your PC? Are you sure, check it. Check UAC.

Well that's lame. After a few fresh install it still not happening.

bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1 doesn't help. I suspect it is something else.

I still get that "Geck has stopped working --- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" upon lauching the program. i can tricked geck by spam/click File. It will load properly but then crash if i open an item or anything.

Im the admin and i dont run UAC.

My GECK is 1.4 from steam and its located C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas

My Fallout New Vegas is the Ultimated edition purchased on the 75% steam sale -- 2013/31/10 for $4.99

My computer is an one year old PC full custom with no viruses whatsoever.

here the spec:

  • System Type

64Bit

  • Processor
    Intel i7 3770k CPU @ 3.50GHz
  • Ram
16GB
  • Memory

  • Graphics Card:

I think i gave as much as i can the information needed. Hope someone can help me!
Side note: If im the only one, guess im an isolated case and modding FNV isnt for me then :'(

Try right clicking on the GECK icon.

Select Properties.

and try this:

If it still does not work, then download this:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

and this

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download (note: this will require that you uninstall your current antivirus program, but unless you are running ESDT

But unless you are running: http://www.eset.com/ or http://www.kaspersky.com/ Microsoft's is better then most of the other commercial ones.

Also check your patching. Run Windows Update. Make sure everything is patched.

type run and UAC and make certain that UAC is off.

Go through your add-remove programs and uninstall all the bloatware which sneaks in (McAfee, every toolbar, and so on)

Just to restate things: Geck works on working systems.

I literally can not count the number of times I have had someone swear their PC was 100% ok and in the end it was not. I would estimate that less then half of PCs are actually perfect. The remainder are somewhere between mostly ok and mostly ruined. I have seen PCs sent back for repair after 3 days of supposedly careful use. Assuming your PC is just fine because it is just a year old is not a safe assumption.
