Guest deleted649591
I played OB for the first time this Saturday. I have been playing MW since 2002, off and on, and after seeing my son playing OB on his X-Box 360 (on a 42” LCD TV no less) I decided to try it myself. I had already played ESI, ESII, Battle Spire, and of course ESIII, so it would have seemed logical for me to grab OB as soon as it came out. Well I didn’t. This was primarily due to many of the bad things written about it. The leveling of the creatures to the PC is still something I can’t believe they did. I thought having fixed leveled creatures appear off a level list was a great idea (like MW). Why that had to change I have no idea. In a way I’m glad I waited since I got the GotY PC edition for $20 at Best Buy. So good or bad the game isn’t costing me much. Plus there are so many mods now that I’m having a terrible time just trying to find a few to start off with. Ok, now impressions (note currently playing with no mods): Graphics are great. Probably the best graphic game I played so far was HL2. This comes close to that, though I think HL2 is better. The building and plant ‘pop-up’ is weird to see and I wish there was a way around that. I guess they can’t expect the PC to render everything in view all the time and have decent frame rates. Playing with dead bodies is cool. Let me rephrase that … playing with dead NPC’s in OB is cool. Once I learned to use the Z button it was interesting. I dragged one body down several flights of stairs just to watch it roll down. I assume this entertainment will pass soon however. I noted that you can’t cloth bodies like in MW. The first person I killed I selected ‘Take All’ and saw them lying in their underwear. I added back the pants/shirt, but the corpse didn’t put them on. Unless I want nakid bodies lying around I’ll have to watch what I select. Sneak is just WAY over used. I can tell if I play a thief I’m going to level like crazy (my first character is a Crusader). Who would not sneak and use sneak attacks all the time? I used it some in MW but in this game it’s like helpful to use it all the time. My Sneak and Marksman have been leveling like crazy. To bad that doesn’t help my class level up. My first level up seemed ok. I got a couple +5. I always add one point to Luck, so just 2 +5 is all I need. Course they were in Agility and Speed. I can’t believe there is no Short Blade skill. I assume that it takes the same skill to use a two-handed claymore as it does a 6 inch dagger. Why didn’t they replace the worthless Mercantile with Short Blade? Or is Mercantile actually useful in OB? Well after leaving the starter dungeon I had no idea where to go or what to do. I just knew I didn’t want to start the main quest right away. I swam the little water in front of me, fought a fish, and was attacked by two bandits. After beating them I went into the ruin they were at. Well I assumed that this ruin would be a simple starter dungeon since it was place right outside the first exit. What I found was pretty tough, but doable. By the time I left I was dropping all kinds of items due to encumbrance. Need more Strength. I would like to find the Fighter’s Guild to join, but it’s not in the capital city and no one will tell me where it’s at, only that they are looking for new members. I figure I’ll have to go visit every town until I find it. Quick travel is easy to love and hate. At first I was going to refuse to use it, but I already find myself using it around town at least. Also I was traveling to a town and found cave. I went into the cave and found a HUGE series of caves filled with goblins. Man I just wanted a little detour but now I’m loaded down with good again. Debating whether or not to go back to town and sell everything again. So far I’m liking it and am looking forward to playing some more. So, what should I be looking for at this point anyway (no spoilers please)? Have I really missed something yet? Is there anything I was supposed to do at the start? Thanks. dezdimona
thers tons of quests and of course you can mod the heck out of the game as well. It does have its good points and its bad as any game does. I've been playing this game since day one, been modding for it almost a year...longer..can't remember. It never ceases to amaze me.A game is what "you" make not what someone else likes or dislikes. Have fun with it,enjoy it for what it was created for.To get more people into playing RPG's
AzirAphale001
I've actually gone in the oposite direction to you, and have just started playing Morrowind for the first time. Anyway, back on topic. Just wander around to start with. There's plenty of quests out in the wilderness, or you could join one of the guilds (there's five).Yes, sneak is easy to use. It is possible to press CAPS and Q and just leave you character there in sneak leveling up, but that takes the fun out of it. That ruin that you found is a favourite spot for mod-makers to put their weapons and armor, along with the IC Market District.
orctor
About the mod thingy i would suggest you to wait with anything big.Play the game first maybe add a couple of new swords and houses. if you want some simple house mod you can check mine they got no new meshes/textures.Just go in to tesnexus.com and find my profile there. I would like to find the Fighter’s Guild to join, but it’s not in the capital city and no one will tell me where it’s at, only that they are looking for new members. I figure I’ll have to go visit every town until I find it." Go the any one the other citys and visit the fighters guild there, they will tell you to go to either cheydinhall or chorrol. Oruboris
My feeling is that the game world has gotten smaller with each Elder scroll game, though I've only played Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion. The worlds have become smaller, the game play more linear, less open ended, but the graphics more sophisticated. I'm not down on Oblivion as many were when it first came out, though: it still has so much to do that it represents great value. Still, Oblivion without Mods would suck: the towns look so much alike, and there are what? maybe 6 voice actors? How much would it have really cost Bethesda to make the world a little bigger, give us short blade, axe and un-armored skills, and give each town a little more personality? Despite all that, I've enjoyed it, and think you will, too.
Eshenaleros
Personally, i think oblivion is better than morrowind, if for no other reason than for the fact that there isn't that stupid miss chance you get when you're on the attack. besides that, oblivion was created specifically to be a modable game, and the modding community has taken that to heart. that's the best part about oblivion - if you don't like something, look for a mod to change it. if there isn't one, ask for it. most of us here on the nexus are friendly. but the mods don't just change what's there already - they add things too! if you want a sword, take a look at the weapons and armor section, and you might be able to find something to suit you - they do have some pretty amazing stuff on this site (after all, there's over 15000 mods here. There has to be a few good ones.)
madman132
Three Years? Well, you certainly took your sweet time =) Oblivion seems like the Beauty queen with no Brain. But there is actually a little more too it. Not as much as in Morrowind, which was also a Beauty queen back in the Day. But it surpasses most other Games with ease. The Graphics are wonderful and actually one of the things i didn't find shallow about that Game. There are no cheap effects, everything is what its supposed to be. You see something on the Horizon, you can go there without "zoning". The Landscape is very well built for the Purposes of the Game, yet it seems natural. Not like in "Two Worlds" where we had some really moronic Ways uphill. And they placed Quest NPCs on Places on the other end of the World.Imagine "Sinderion" was located at the Hermeaus Mora Shrine. They actually do something like that, they give you a Quest where you have to collect shitty Item #4589 which isn't useful in any Way except for that Quest. And there's no fast travel in that Game. You can use Teleporters, but the next one is far away.Thats like Going to Cheydinhal because you can only fast travel from Cities to Cities and then fasttravel to Bruma for a stroll to the Hermeaus Mora Shrine. So much Fun -.- Some Things are really half assed in Oblivion. The Ships are always the same, very few of them there, they all look alike and in case of the ones boarded in the Imperial City will never be able to leave because Leyawin is in the Way. They couldn't go through with a Canal through the City because of the console Version, but having someone to drop the Land around a bit so that there was a canal around the city was too much to ask? The Imperial Palace is a big insult. Chancelor ocato sits around in a big empty room all day. The Mages Guild is ridiculously small. When Archmage Traven told me about something that he discussed in the Mages Council i thought that i wanted to see that Place. "Mages Council" sounds fascinating.Later i realized i already visited that Place, infact i was there while imagining how fascinating such a Place would be.The "Mages Council" consists of three People, standing around when they feel like it in a very little room. "Bosses" are not worth to be called that. "Mannimarco", basically the Boss of all the Necromancers, is a Wood Elf. I took him down with one Shot. I was standing there awaiting that he would resurrect, transforming maybe, into some Sort of uberlich. But now, mannimarco was just as weak as any other Necromancer. Go Play "Gothic 3". That isn't halfassed, that's "Non Assed". They took a look at Oblivion, said "Wow, lets do something like that!". Apparently they didn't see that the Bethesda Guys had to work under ridiculous Time constraints and that this shows pretty obviously in some Places. So they set out to make Gothic 3 like Oblivion. With less time, one fifth of the People and less Resources. They tried and they failed. "Gothic 3" is one of the biggest Disasters ever happened to a Gamecompany, to the Fans of the Franchise and to the Publisher. Gothic 3 is to the Gothic Games what the Matrix Sequels are to the Matrix. It's that bad. So, there are a few things Bethesda could have done better. But look around; Oblivion is pretty much the best you can find in the Class of Adventure Games. What more can you ask for?=)
David Brasher
I would recommend that you play Oblivion all the way through the first time before you start installing mods. You should complete the main quest, and maybe rise to the top of a guild. You may even want to start some new characters of different classes and play them for awhile before you make the world wierd. Some mods have drastic effects that change everything. It is fortunate that you can turn off the ones that don't suit you. My biggest gripe about Oblivion is that there are so few factions to join. I tend to play righteous heros. I therefore am only really interested in joining the Mages' Guild or Fighters' Guild. Stealing is wicked, so most of my characters don't want to join the Thieves' Guild. Killing the innocent is very wicked. I therefore do not want to join the Dark Brotherhood, or compete at the Arena. I guess the opponents at the arena get what they deserve because they participate, but there are so many villains and monsters in the world that need killing, that I would feel like I was wasting time as well as killing the innocent if I fought at the arena. Enjoy your new game and welcome to the world of Oblivion!
roquefort
Mods that do no more than improve the look of the game are worth installing right away. Weather mods, for instance, or Unique Landscapes, Illumination Within (which lights up city windows at night), or the various better body and face mods; all of those will make for a better game experience without affecting in-game objectives. Deepblue686
If you dislike the fixed levelling for items and enemies like most of us, download Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul. It also adds more enemies, items and quests. Word of warning, the sudden difficulty increase can be like hitting a brick wall. Mods that do no more than improve the look of the game are worth installing right away. Weather mods, for instance, or Unique Landscapes, Illumination Within (which lights up city windows at night), or the various better body and facemods; all of those will make for a better game experience without affecting in-game objectives. Don't forget Alien Slof's model and texture replacements like her Horses and Robe Trader mod, the vanilla versions simply look terrible and/or boring when you have to re-install the game
