BossDweebe
Has something similar happen to anyone else ? I had just finished the Shetcombe Farm quest, and when I went back to the stable at the farm Mandil was lying dead next to the fence.I had seen her at Anvil a couple of Cyrodill days before, and that surprised me, as I have only ever seen her in Imperial City.(I know Mandil well as she is one of the first NPC's I re clothed). Anyway - I replayed the quest twice (once with difficulty at 0 to speed things up), and her death did not repeat. She is still well, and at the IC Market District. I was sort of disappointed that she did not show at the farm again. I left the cave several times hoping to defend her from whatever evil that killed her on the first go.Ah well - Guess I'll have to settle for just being the "Hero of Kvatch" for a little longer. And, as the Nines would have it, I got more useful loot on the first go round.
nachtefuchs
I've seen similar things: Castle Staff travelling between cities, Othrelos (Journeyman Sneak Trainer) in Skingrad, etc... It seems the NPC's have more active AI than we give them credit for.
dezdimona
Random events occur.Adds a little mystery to the game I think
Crimsanity
Certain NPCs actually steal things if they don't have the gold to buy them (like food, seen someone steal bread before). Since they have no gold, if they're caught, they'll fight the guards. They pretty much always lose. So if you see an NPC laying dead somewhere, this may be the cause. Check their inventory, if they have bread or some other food/necessary for survival item, is likely they stole it and died for it. If you're lucky, you can witness this happening and try to defend them. I did, was fun fighting off the guards 'til an arrow meant for me ended the life of my poor NPC friend. :(

Deepblue686
I've seen similar things: Castle Staff travelling between cities, Othrelos (Journeyman Sneak Trainer) in Skingrad, etc... It seems the NPC's have more active AI than we give them credit for. I've noticed this as well.Talking to the Khajiit at the Imperial City waterfront district let's you ask him about Thoronir (who's all the way over in Skingrad) and as for not being able to do certain things with NPCs being dead, I've had the bad luck to not be able to purchase the Skingrad house after finding the Orc responsible lying underneath the bridge to the castle. I'm guessing he just couldn't cope selling houses and kicking out the previous owners. And we all know about Bighead over in the Shivering Isles and his insatiable love for forks of all sizes. Eshenaleros
This is known as the "Random NPC Death" Glitch, and really, the radiant AI is just so bloody screwy I don't think there's really anything we can do about it without buying an entirely new game. It only happens to certain character however, though I don't think it's a mistake when that battle mage in the mage's guild questline springs that trap (Vague, I know, but those who've seen it should know what I'm talking about)
BossDweebe
Yeah ! In this instance it was definitly random. I had though that Mandil may be a thief as she is asecurity specalist, but it is very doubtful a guard caughther stealing in this location. Some of the other NPC's I may have left for dead, but I like Mandil - so young (about 45 I think), and good looking. I just had to let her live.... DEEPBLUE - What bad luck. The Orc must have gone bust in thefinancal crisis. He should have never invested in properties in Kvatch.
madman132
That maybe an Idea for a Mod; although it may not be possible. Maybe its a Suggestion for TES 5. Have NPCs serve time in the Prison. If i was *that* poor that i had to steal a Loaf of Bread just to survive, i'd probably make it so the Guards would see me. In the Oblivion world, nothing ever spoils so i'll get fresh Food everyday in a nice warm Place with a solid Roof over my Head. In any "realistic" World, Guards or if you want to, Policemen will be pretty much used to the Fact that the Prisons are more comfortable than the Streets and some People will try to steal something rather big to serve a Sentence that will keep them in Prison rather then the Streets for the Winter. So, i'd like to see City Swimmer in a Bravil Prison if she stole some Bread. Another Thing, even if some NPC is depicted as so desperate and/or lunatic that s/he would rather "resist Arrest" rather then serve a Sentence, Guards could try to bring that one in, with the use of non-deadly Force if possible. Have a random Chance that the NPC will either give up or will lose consciousness so the Guards can bring em in.
Oruboris
"Suicide Orc" tries to take the quickest route into town, dives off the bridge. You'll often get a quest marker for his location even after his corpse has timed out and vanished-- or maybe he falls through the ground, as things do sometimes.
