Deleted54170User
They are not one of a kind. They might have some similiarities to what fixes I had done. Problem is that Video card drivers on my system actually quit when I had the old drivers in there. I upgraded the nVidia 8600 sets drivers after seeing the message, "Your video cards drivers have stopped working". A yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside it was on my Quick launch bar. As soon as I read the message it changed and was replaced with, "They have been successfully restarted." Yeh! After my game crashed!I upgraded the drivers for my video card and a couple times when I was going through the Megaton door the picture froze just like yours. Sound card was working, computer light was flickering.I figured something about the new drivers was bad. I opened Device Manager and switched back to the previous drivers. No problems occurred for several game play days. Not real time.I Saved. I walked up to the door and clicked. The game crashed, "There's a problem with your computer would you like to report this incident and see if there is a solution available?" So! Do you have a video card you haven't upgraded the drivers to in awhile? Have you an antivirus tool running that may be stopping files from swapping because they have not passed the latest tests pending an exmaination like Microsoft used to do if we loaded any files on to the machine that weren't yet certified by Microsolt. Files the game runs that the antivirus might think are suspicious? I recommend upgrading or downgrading your video cards drivers first to test that first. Secondly I recommend you turn off the Internet connection modem and shut off your antivirus software to test and see if your machine is suffering from file submission testing. If there are Fallout 3 files in the Fallout 3 root folder, like mine had. after a complete reinstall that the virus scanner decided were not safre because they had not been certified yet, your game will stop locking up while the Antivirus software is off. Just a couple suggestions. If you find your game is freed up than see if you can give permission for those .dll files and such in the Fallout 3 root folder so your virus scanner wont lock your video card drivers up or stop your Fallout 3 root folder files from loading properly. Hope that helps.

Deleted54170User
Here's another little point for Vista. Windows Defender can be switched off and on. I turned it on back when I was searching for a new Malware, Spyware, etc suite. I just had a little mouse control freeze. I could see the Pipboy-3000 and the pictures background was moving but the mouse arrow was frozen. I shut down and as my temperature started rising that Windows Defender gave up a pop up message that something had changed in file.I turned off Windows Defenders, "Microsofts little malware, spyware sniffer" and returned to playing the game. overload1977
yes Windows Defender can be a nightmare just set it so it only runs once a week sundays is a good time....
Deleted54170User
That Internet Security Suite I installed already has a bundled malware, spyware, and recognizes new forms of ill willed little sneak stuff. Having Windows Defender turned on isn't in my best interest. I just turn it off when playing the game.
Guest
I had a same problem that game "freezes" (Screen black, music playing backround, no loading etc.) during loading some areas e.g. all places in Megaton, Pitt entrance etc. Game "freezes" occasionally also in quick saving. But accidentally I noticed that there is no freeze at all! Loading & saving somehow just take long time... and I mean very long time = 10-20 minutes!!! I don't know what causes that? I've tried all "tricks" mentioned in this topic but none helps? Gladly this happens only in some places and I just have to wait when it "freezes" The Pitt is the worst for me! I do not have any mods! I have only Anchorage, Pitt and BS.
Deleted54170User
Do the freezes happen a few minutes after you start playing? Maybe a half an hour later? Or maybe an hour or two?
