Hello out there,

after the last automatic windows 10 update last week I run into a serious sound issue. My ingame sound vanishes after several minutes, completly. I hear a crackling noise and then the sound is completly gone, only solution is to restart the game.

The game runs smoothly then, no ctd.

I tried the following things to get rid of the bug:

Install eveything from direct X

install vcr redist

install new hd realtek audio driver

install new grafic drivers

checked my headphones (there are not broken)

disabled the touchpad from my notebook

get in touch with bethesda support for a week and tryed there solutions, yes every day

literally I have no ideas what to do, I am stuck has anyone an Idea what to do?

Heya Daragoth.

Ugh. Those darned updates! They are definitely not always friendly!

Especially to gamers!

I will say tho, that you at least got off easy, and it was an incompatibility with your sound, not your video or something like that.

My advice is to roll back your system to a previous restoration point prior to the update, and then uninstall the update (if needed). ANd then try to block that puppy!

Here is directions on how to access your System Restore options

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/use-system-restore-a5ae3ed9-07c4-fd56-45ee-096777ecd14e

And here is how to uninstall that update, along with how to (supposedly) block that one from reinstalling.

I say "supposedly" because as a tech, I know that what Microsoft sometimes says, isn't really what's real.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/use-system-restore-a5ae3ed9-07c4-fd56-45ee-096777ecd14e

If the rollback/restoration actually does take it off your system, instead of just changing your system settings, I would recommend checking into that tool anyway, to see if you can still block that update.

I really hope that this helps!

PS: After doing the first rollback, I would highly recommend creating a new one, as soon as your system finishes rebooting. Also, if you haven't done one of those before... don't interrupt it. Sometimes they take a long time. It may seem like your computer has frozen up. It hasn't. Sometimes it really just takes a while. Especially during the reboot.

Thank you very much for the fast response Stormwolf01!

But honestly before I touch the updates (have difficults to remember which one it was! :( ) I want to search for other solutions.

It is possible that a mod cause a conflict with the sound drivers? I have not much mods Installed 58 in total I think.

Thank you in advance.

Heyas Daragoth
Not a problem  Always glad to try to help out, and I happened to have a lot of time to be online today :D

Well, there's only been a single update recently. So if you had only one installed, it won't be hard to find from the list.

You are looking for the KB number. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/cumulative-monthly-updates-for-windows-10-and/91bff1dd-5f63-477f-b60a-267b0a19c858

You can find the list of currently installed updates in the Add/Remove programs list in the control panel.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uninstall-or-remove-apps-and-programs-in-windows-4b55f974-2cc6-2d2b-d092-5905080eaf98

Ok so I have a question or two. That Bethesda may not have covered. Are you using any kind of software overlay? Like the Steam overlay for watching the FPS, or overlays for screen capture, or anything like that?

I know that the steam overlay has had issues with Win updates in the past.

When you are starting the game, are you starting it thru steam? Thru a mod manager? Thru F4se?

Have you tried playing it directly from the fallout4 launcher.exe? (If you are running the game with f4se mods, I recommend trying This on a new character, because the scripted mods from the F4se plugins won't be present and could cause savegame corruption issues)

Have you checked to see if any other applications have the same problem? Like media player softwares, or browser flash players?

You'd said that your headphones are working ok. What about the system's speakers?

When the game sound crashes, will other applications still play sound? (Is this local to just the game, or is it a sound driver crash?)

This, we call process of elimination  Problem solving 101

As for mods, I mean... it would have to be mods that replace sounds, or have sound files in them. I wouldnt rule out that a mod may have a file that system doesn't know how to play correctly, and it could (possibly) cause some issues.

Have you installed any mods that have custom sounds, or sound replacers since you noticed the problem?
