Fresh install - best method of patching and getting DLC?

Ok, I keep reading lots of horror stories about how the DLC is breaking the game etc. Mine just broke so I reinstalled today. I haven't patched yet or installed any mods.

What I'd like to do is get all 3 DLC expansions and as many mods as I can.

Should I just go straight for the DLC or do you need to patch the game first? I'm confused here...

Mine is broken as well and from what I can decipher from my research so far, you need patch 1.5 to install broken steel OR you can use patch 1.4 plus the fake patch from fo3nexus. I may be experimenting later tonight with it so I'll let you know.

after plenty of fussing around, i got brokensteel running.

after the third reinstall, I patched straight to the 1.5 patch, as well as the unofficial Fallout3 patch available here on the nexus (not using Fake Patch though). Broken Steel is now working, no hold ups in the citadel, and I'm enroute to the first quest.

At the moment i only have the DLC's, m203, and my own mod loaded (which consists of some custom armors and clothes), but I havent had any conflicts yet. Will try lateron to load some more mods and see how it goes.
