The ability to cast spells without unequipping weapons/shields BALANCE

I'm not sure how such a positive feature that was present in Oblivion still hasn't made its way into the Skyrim mod community, but here's my stab at it.

In Oblivion, I was very much able to achieve that paladin/templar feeling when my two-handed sword wielder could raise his weapon into the air and, at the cost of blocking, cast a healing spell. I'm sure many of you felt the same way about your battle mages, who could sling fireballs from a distance without laying down your sword and shield just in case things got too close and personal.

My proposal to keep it balanced, if someone can figure out how to actually code it into the game, is to make this ability a perk point available in each magic tree (halfway up sounds about right, in my opinion. A standalone perk, of course). That way, not only could you cast your favorite spells without having to switch equipment on and off (which disrupts gameplay and chips away at immersion), but it would remain balanced/lore friendly in that your character can only do this with schools of magic he/she is proficient in.

(My apologies. My intent was to include a few screenshots from Oblivion, but after using every bit of instruction I could find, I still couldn't get any screenshots out of that game...)

but that is only one button pressed... sword on 1, healspell on 3, lightning on 4 ... you waste guys with sword equipped, press 3 and you go heal, double = left and right equipped, or you go 3 and 4 to put heal in one hand and lightning in the other... i find that pretty convenient.

you do know that you can "hotkey" favorites to numbers 1 - 8, do you?

in my case im using armed to the teeth easy version, it kind of bug the weapons if you try to swap them without sheating frist.

Yes, I know how to hotkey favorites, and I'm not suggesting to take that method out of the game if that's how you'd like to do it. This is more for the sake of immersion than gameplay (not to say gameplay wouldn't be affected), and immersion is a strong factor in ANY Elder Scrolls game. See in -my- imagination, a paladin doesn't have to sheath his sword every time he needs to heal himself, and a battle mage can channel his destruction spells through his weapons. I'm all for restrictions on this mod (hence the perk point suggestion), and I'd even be okay with certain spells/schools actually -requiring- bare hands in order to cast. But simple healing/destruction spells, in my mind, shouldn't be hindered by a weapon in the right hands. Especially where, as I mentioned, this was a system used in Oblivion that worked perfectly.

Google Smart Cast mod, That has exactly what you are looking for.

Interesting... the Nexus is down at the moment, so I can't give it a try just yet, but this just might do the trick. I'll add a follow up if I can indeed achieve the desired function once I have it installed, so thanks in advance!
