TGBlank
Many modders come from Oblivion, and I guess not many have played previous Fallout games, so they dont know the lore behind it, or care. So that could be the reason why game gets much Oblivion like mods and stuff that isnt lore friendly, ( = Shiny and clean modern weapons, clean faces and nude bodys, squad/army mods, anime stuff etc. ) Correct me if i'm wrong, but nowhere in oblivion or TES lore you will find shiny and clean modern weapons, nude bodies, squad/armies or anime stuff. All that was added as extras through mods. If you look carefully, any mod that's somewhat moddable have gotten naked mods, mighty guns, anime stuff and lightsabers... It has nothing to do with oblivion per se, it's just something that happens with all moddable mods.

Tahadar
I prefectly remember in F2 a random encounter where a group of Unwashed Villagers were shooting at a Spamer... Don't know if that one used threads for off-topic shameless promotion or not, but... Heh, that's really dissapointing BadPenny.

BadPenney
Heh, that's really dissapointing BadPenny.I'm just messing with you Tahadar. Sometimes I crack myself up. Actually my preferences fall somewhere in the middle. I don't want my char to have to suck the marrow out of the bones of dead animals to keep from dying like that geezer from the survival shows, but I'm not going to be wearing cat ears either. As far as "canon" goes... do you remember how the brahmin used to say, "Moo. Moo, I say."? I liked the occasional Monty Python feel of the original Fallout. Tahadar
Those were jokes that felt like jokes if you know what I mean. Like "I can't let you do that, Dave" - obvious refference to Space Odissey 2001. Or talking head encounter, bridge encounter, Holy Hand Grenade and many others. If I remember! Hell, when F2 finally arrived in my country and managed to buy it I've played it 6 months almost non-stop and I lost my job because of that. I'm not a kid, I HAVE kids, but F2 is the only game that managed to wake up in me that kid that lives in every one of us regardless of age. F2 was "by gamers for the gamers".F3 is by a company for paying cusomers. But we are not talking about F2 vs F3.Finally if someone - usually alone, most moders work alone in oposition with whole teams in game industry - puts a great deal of time and effort and passion to make a mod, it hurts to think twice before starting it? ... and even your joke was ... uhmm... not nice, yes, a mod like that would add realism. I can't say I would like the view, but I don't like the view of tortured remains of people in raider camps either.
Michlo
I too like the banquet analogy. They are your own personal choice and preference. Mods vastly improve your game because YOU choose which ones work for you. End of. :)
Brianide
On the whole, I think it's a non-issue. What it comes down to is that there are only two parties who can actively ruin your gameplay experience: you, and Bethesda. There's some points I think are worth addressing directly, though.Cybernetic player character? Shinny white clothes? Uber-modern weapons? Compact models of textures? Night vision gear? Laser pointers? Ah, c'mon...Basically the war was in "optimistic '50". Visuals should be vintage style. Tech should be limited on "victorian steam punk" style. One of main flaws of Fallout Tactics was the weapon way too modern (AK 47, Brownings, etc).No offense, but I think it's funny that you cite laser pointers as a timeline violation in a game that features laser guns. Fallout is full of anachronisms; most of the ones introduced by respectable mods aren't any more extreme that those encountered in the canonical universe.Ah, yes, we can just pull out a tech "from some vault" just like a magician pulls out rabbits from hat. OK. So a Vault with limited resources throws out it's main purpose - survival - and starts researching new technologies. And this attempt not only fails to endanger the survival, but is even sucessfull. And the cherry on the top: no one else uses that tech, but you. Cool, ha?Survival isn't the primary objective of many of the vaults. The majority of them (or all of them, I don't recall) have some quirk to them; in Fallout 3 alone, Vault 101, Vault 106, Vault 108, Vault 92, Vault 87, and Vault 112 all have some sort of experimental purpose, and most of the inhabitants of said vaults are dead. As for no one else using the tech, well, no one else runs around in Chinese Stealth Armor, either.Another aspect - and I'm also guilty of this one. You upgrade some enemies in vanila verson to feel the real challenge. You can increase the amount of them, the SPECIAL, the equipment. But they die like anyone else. You loot the gear and bam! Unbalancing is there. You just got a 95% gatling laser that worth 1000+ at any merchant. Ah, yes, you can remove that gatling from loot table, but would not be frustrating for someone that plays the mod to find a 10mm pistol instead of that gatling?I just increased the difficulty damage multipliers for Very Hard so that the player deals damage at 90% the normal rate and receives damage at 450% the normal rate. It's not overly punishing, and it doesn't screw up the economy any more than it already is.Visuals. Another source of frustration. Even they look cool - hell, I spend literally hours staring at toons with nice clothes - they are kinda unrealistic. I've recently saw a pic with some girl with shinny white clothes wielding a sword near a dead behemot. Now THATs an achievement! You kill a behe in melee AND your clothes are still white and shinny. Yeah, I'm kidding, but we are talking about immersion here. Is Wasteland ffs! Clothes should be dusty, dirty, blood stained. Weapons (visuals too). If you look at weapons (moded and retextured ones) most of them looks like factory brand new weapons. Even many of vanila weapons have this issues. They are 200 years old, wtf? OK, I can accept that militaristic organistion (Bos, Enclave, Talons) have great care of their weapons, but raiders and muties? On the other side: compact polymers weapons (eg. M41A pulse thingie). C'mon, who developed poymers in those 200 years? And who actually manufactured those weapons? Fosil fuels are long gone. They just melted plastic bags and made the case?I actually agree here, for the most part. I wish more people would make their custom weapons a bit more rugged; finding weapons in the wasteland is pristine condition is a bit jarring. As for the M41A and such, again, anachronisms really don't bother me, since we're talking about a game world that features androids alongside a computer operating system about as sophisticated as DOS. Ihoe
in my opinion, there is lack (huge one) of quality in FO3 mods, simply because everyone thinks they are GECK masters. just every day tons of crap gets uploaded and no one downloads them, so they will rot the files section. I believe that there is also lack of creativity. there 4 weapon overhaul mods out there that each of them conflict another. how about merging all of them to not crash the game?we are having good working mods, but they do conflict with each other. and most of them have lack of story and design.I think the modding community is just becoming rookie. just look at CS 1.6 mods, the game is 10 years old but they created weapon modifications for it at that time which Were Better than FO3 mods.but still if we throw out Crap mods, FO3 modding community is great. BTW If we want to look at immersion the whole game is stupid. after 200 years there are working weapons and ammo, the super muties managed to live that long and the world still hasn't recovered from acopolypse? all people have managed to find guns? Electricity is still being deployed? robots are working?... etc... etc...

That is perfectly normal in any healthy modding community. It's crap like that what makes decent modders set personal quality standards. how about merging all of them to not crash the game?Correct me if i'm wrong but you can load them all without crashing the game, you'll just get the leveled lists of the last one. Heck, you could even swap their places every now and then to get different guns spawned. Also, fo3edit haves an experimental "create merged patch" thingy going on, not as polished as good ol wrye, but it should do the trick with the leveled lists. My point of crossovers is: If you have the friggin bridge of the USS enterprise in the (previous) game, and you have something as lacking of plot as Anchorage (with stealth suit, sniper railgun, not to mention everything inside is pristine and shiny-new) and call it cannon, you can pretty much justify anything you add to the game ever. You can add hello kitty as a playable race and say it was a result of radiation and it wont be stranger than some stuff already ingame. You just pic w/e 'feel' you want Your game to have, and download those mods. And chances are? unless you have pretty low standards, 90% of the mods in the nexus won't be of your liking and won't be of the particular feel you want, and this variety is perfectly normal in a healthy modding community. Instead of complaining about the 90%, enjoy the 10% that fits your tastes. Give the community a couple years and even that 10% will be more than what can fit in your load order.
