theLeeHarvey
This is a simple enough question I guess. I installed Fallout 3 into the Program Files directory (before I knew what bad news that was, lol). Fortunately, I have had Vista's UAC turned off for a long time, because of a different game, and I only experience a CTD very rarely, but they do happen. I am now wondering, even with the UAC turned off, will I still have problems with running Fallout 3? If I will, can I just move the Bethesda Softworks folder to another directory, say My Games, without having to reinstall the game and will it still work if I do? The reason I ask is I would rather not have to deal with reinstalling the game, plus the patches (official and unofficial), FOMM, FOSE, ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated and the relatively few mods that I am using. I know it's not a whole lot of work, but I am a bit lazy. :P Any answers would be greatly appreciated.LeeHarvey
phoneyLogic
Just try it ;). In most cases the *.exe is able to run the program without problem as long as the lower folder structure is correct. You'll have to correct your linked desktop-shortcut-icon-things and so on manually or just run the launcher directly in the game dir.The problem is, that the game is registered in you registry with all the origin paths. If problems occur, it would be 10000 times easier to reinstall fallout than changing all the registry entries. So if you are lazy do the following:1. Uninstall Fallout2. Install Fallout to the new location3. copy the content of your old location (the mod stuff what's left after uninstall) into the new location Good luck ;)
theLeeHarvey
Thanks Psyclops, I thought about that. Actually, What I thought about doing, so I didn't have to bother with reinstalling all the mods, was to just copy my Fallout3/data folder and save it to a separate location, then uninstall the game, reinstall it, and copy the old data folder back over the new one in the new install location. Of course, FOMM and FOSE would have to be reinstalled because they are in the Fallout3 folder as opposed to the data folder, but the rest of the mods would already be in place with the necessary textures and meshes in the copy I had made. Does anyone see any potential problems with doing this? Or am I just rewording what you've already suggested Psyclops? ;D
ocwil
also you will need to change the registery -first launch regedit (if youdont know how: start>run...>regedit-then search for fallout 3 (crl+F) find the install folder and change it to where you want to have it tada-save (ctrl+S)and exit

bben46
If using a registry cleaner - Ccleaner or any other cleaner Make a system restore point before cleaning - in case of a problem. Be sure you have removed the game using the uninstall provided - NOT by deleting the game manually. Restart the computer - this allows the registry to flag the game references as orphans - not belonging to any installed program. If you clean without restarting, it may miss some of them. Run the cleaner to remove the orphans - it will find a lot more than just the game references & may help the computer to work better. Then after the cleaning restart the computer again to complete the cleaning process. If something went wrong, you do have a system restore point. Don't you? theLeeHarvey
Overload and Bben - Thanks guys that's very helpful. Exactly what I was looking for. I do have one other problem though. I was looking for my saved game file and I can't find it to back it up before I start the reinstall process. I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find it. Any pointers as to where I should look? Thanks again and sorry for being so needy, lol.
