elokinsremmus
SOLUTION FOUND Thank You Lord Garon Go to regedit And Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders Look for the Personal REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\DocumentsIt should look like that. If it doesn't Change it so it does. Right click/Modify and change it. I have been Fighting with this for about a week now. I have tried every which way to enable my greyed out data files in the launcher. I have many Issues Please READ ALL INFO before posting 1: My Skyrimprefs.ini and my Saves are NOT in Documents\my games\skyrim They are In appdata\local\skyrim\my games\skyrimEdit: Appdata is where the files generated. I did not set it that way. I can't figure out why this is or how to change it. Skyrim is on my C: in Program files\steam2:When I first started playing I had a small windowed game, I can't change my preferences in the launcher to fit my resolution. So i found a Fake full screen fix. It was a new .ini file. I replaced the file with that and YAY Fullscreen. When I learned about mods I tried many ways NMM(crashes), MO(tries to pull from non-existent drive) and Manual Install. Upon seeing that I can't Access Data Files. I found the many guides about it. I looked in my ini file and that code is in the Fake Full Screen ini file. But data still grey. 3: Have deleted to a vanilla skyrim and Ran so I get new ini file. When I open it there is NO launcher section 4: I have tried adding that code to the respawned ini, my old ini, at the top, at the bottom, in the middle, before the water section etc. 5: My respawned ini looks like this Georgiegril
Why are you not using the default locations? It may solve your problem/
elokinsremmus
That's where the files generated. I can't figure out how to change that. There is no My Games in Documents. I'm running win7 all permissions are set to admin . Edited December 5, 2013 by elokinsremmus
Lord Garon
If your savegames, etc, are winding up in the wrong directory, you need to fix that before anything else. Most Windows programs utilize system variables to identify storage locations. It sounds like there has been a change to your system environment variables. Let me ask a couple questions:1. Do you have Windows on an SSD? Did you move any folders around to make room or reduce writes to the SSD?2. What version of Windows do you have? What data gets saved where is a profile issue. Just as a quick check, please try this: 1. Call up a command prompt. (Start button->type cmd in the search box->click on cmd.exe)2. type in the following and hit ENTER: echo %USERPROFILE% You "should" get C:\Users\"your-login-name" for a standard local account. Let me know what you get (you needn't give out your login name, just tell me if its correct) and the answers to the other two questions. Lord Garon
Thanks. The FullScreen Fix ini looks okay, at any rate. Couple more questions before we muck around with the system:1. Has Skyrim EVER run correctly on your machine, or is this a recent problem?2. Do you share this computer with other users, ie, is it on a network or just your personal computer hooked to the Internet? Its very important to be specific about directory names now. You say there is no "My Games" folder under "Documents". Click on "Documents" to select it, then right-click and select Properties. Make sure "My Documents" is in the folder list and the pathname is (C:\Users\YourUsername) and that its ticked if a checkbox is there. Click OK. If you expand YourUsername-->My Documents can you see "My Games"? How about other "MY" folders, like "My Music" and "My Pictures"?
elokinsremmus
1: As far as I can tell no. I originally had the razor version. But I had the same issue So I went and bought it cause someone told me about the sale. So I figured for 15$ I can support em and get a working game I can mod. 2: It's my personal Laptop. There is only my account So I was a bit confused but I right-clicked properties for the Documents folder in Libraries, Here's what it looked like I also have my sidebar for the folders and the regular documents propertieshttp://imageshack.com/a/img22/5633/pv5g.jpg I can't seem to make the documents folder in c:\users\me to unset read only. I uncheck click apply and ok and when i reopen it it's still read only. The My Pics, Music etc aren't in Documents cause it's win7 so they have their own section I'm in the process of saving my stuff to an external so I can Dban and restore windows hoping a fresh install and clean HDD will help Also wanna say thank you for taking the time to help me troubleshoot this :) I have been having a hell of a time trying to get someone to help me Edited December 5, 2013 by elokinsremmus
Lord Garon
The "Documents" issue isn't really a problem, you can add "My Documents" to the library; I'm just trying to figure out why you can't see the directory "My Games". It should have been created during install. The Read-Only attribute on the directory is normal, you cannot reset it. If you want to try a quick fix instead of reinstalling: 1. Right-click on your "My Documents" folder and make a new "My Games" folder2. Right-click on the new "My Games" and create a new "Skyrim" folder3. Launch Steam and verify the integrity of the game files; it may restore your linkages EDIT: I can only hope you are being honest with me right now and have bought the game; they will ban me for helping a pirate. elokinsremmus
I know. I am. I do not want to get banned either I can supply my steam receipt # if they ask. But I wasn't sure if maybe that might have messed up my install path.... which is why i mentioned it. I did try deleting the folder in appdata then relaunching and it recreated the folder in appdata. I will try it again and run the integrity check this time. this is crazy. Edit: So I did that and it said 2 files blah bah. So I checked the new folder I made c:\users\me\documents\my games\skyrim Nothing, and Nothing in appdata. BUT a My Games folder was created on C:\ So the path is C:\My Games\Skyrim but the folder is empty Re-launched and it still created the folder in Appdata. *sigh* Edited December 5, 2013 by elokinsremmus

I would suspect the "previous" install mucked around with storage locations. From my end, I would now ask you to look at some registry locations that contain pathnames for various "default" storage locations which the "previous" install may have changed. This could get involved; if you are going to re-install Windows anyways, that may be the best way to restore the things that I am going to ask you to check next. Back-and-forth in a forum is probably slower, and more error prone, than re-installing. For example, fire up regedit and navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders This key contains entries which Windows uses to make a "guess" as to where certain data is stored. In particular, I'm interested in the "Personal" value. On my machine, it looks like: Personal REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Documents Does yours point to %USERPROFILE%\Documents? (We know %USERPROFILE% is correct already) (these are the kind of things I will ask) In fact, thinking about it, I don't know if this will actually help other people who read this thread, or not. (It IS an issue; people are moving folders off of SSD's at an amazing rate and it causes just these type problems) I think its time to punt and let you re-install.
