Creation Kit not starting and "Steam" is not helping

Since there are both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of both the Creation Kit and Skyrim, you need to make sure that you are using the ones that go together.

Skyrim 32 bit (original with / without DLC, and Legendary):

The 32 bit Creation Kit is found in your Tools section of your Steam library. It is free to install.

Skyrim 64 bit (Special Edition with / without CC, and Anniversary Edition):

The 64 bit Creation Kit is found within the Steam Store in the Software section. It is free to purchase and install.

I've had this combination of Skyrim (LE) and Creation Kit for years, infact I have over 2K hours using it, it's just yesterday it Stopped launching. I was running the creation kit just last week working on a mod, of course I have the correct combination. I haven't made any changes in Steam or PC at all. When I tried to search for the correct Creation Kit in Steam (to reinstall it) it was no longer listed (Only the SE version of CK). I've verified my CK files over and over and just today noticed my MO (LE) will launch CK but it soon crash's due to the multiple masters issue (Was ok launching it through the Desktop shortcut). The problem is with Steam but they show no way of a complete reinstall (It isn't even listed in Steam anymore).

In your Steam library at the left hand side is a drop down with the options: Games, Software, Tools

By default I think that Games is the only one active. You need to put a check next to Tools in order to see the 32 bit Creation Kit. You may need to uncheck Games to make it easier to locate in the list. The tools are listed in alpha-numeric order and you would be looking specifically for "Skyrim Creation Kit".

If it is not there, I do not know what to tell you as it is still there for me and I haven't had it installed in years.

Yes, I know all that, I does list there *But not in the main Steam search (even with "Tools" checked) only the SE version. With that checked it's still in my library but there's still no reason to believe there is anything there (in Steams pool) for a new download. Like I've said before, I know I have the correct combination, I have 2034 hrs using it/them together (making mods). Still, it won't launch from desktop, skyrim folder or steam although I was using it last week. I really (still) can't see how this has anything to do with Steam no-longer listing this in their main search and now it won't launch, gets to the first screen says "Initializing Archive" then crashes from all three icons. MO can start the program, but it won't run (multi master fix only works for normal launch's).

Trying Steam Support>Contact Game Support for the Creation Kit only leads to a blank screen. Apparently Steam offers no comment or paths of customer support or ability to create a ticket for this program. This program used to be listed in their main search, now it's not there and this stopped working recently.

I have no idea what you mean by "main search".

If you are referring to the Store search, it will never appear there as the 32 bit Creation Kit was never in the store.

If you are referring to the search in your Library, it appears fine for me despite not being installed and not having the Tools section active.

If you just want to re-install the Creation Kit, you need to uninstall the current instance first before getting the option to download and install.

Anything else, you might need to include pictures / video to help explain what you are trying to get across.

Yes, it does and always has appeared in my Library. It does not launch through the icons (used to), the steam support leads to a blank page (didn't used to be blank) and there's no-longer any discussion about the CK anywhere in Steam (except the very old). It really seems they are trying to drop the LE version of the Creation Kit and forget it. Still, it used to work (has for years) then after I make no changes in PC or Steam account, it does not work.

Still, what does LE version, SE version have to do with anything? my original post said nothing about that other than my saying I have thousands of hours as a *Reply? I downloaded the Creation Kit from Steam, it was listed (Or I couldn't have found and downloaded it *from Steam). It worked for years, then it didn't and I'm posting here to see if anybody knows anything regarding the issue.

After encountering several threads in the LE section that ultimately was discovered to have been about SE, I find it better to remind that both exist and try to get the original poster to indicate which version they are actually working with. And point them to the appropriate section if necessary.

You caught on to that and indicated that you were referring to 32 bit / Oldrim / LE.

As for whatever is going on with Steam, I cannot say. I can see that the Creation Kit is still listed in my library and has the 'Install' button (since it is not installed). I can see that all the links on the library page (store page, community hub, discussions and guides) all go to the main store page rather than something specific to the Creation Kit. However, I cannot say that those ever did anything else as I never used those links before from that particular location.

You indicated that you wanted to download the Creation Kit again. To do this one would need to first uninstall what is present. Steam does not allow one to download any software a second time without first uninstalling the previous install. However, verifying should work without needing to do a complete re-install.

If you have already verified and it still does not work. Other than a complete uninstall and then re-install (and no guarantee that that would work), I do not know.

As far as an issue with Steam itself, yours is the first that I have heard regarding this.

I have verified my Creation Kit many times in the last few days (People usually start that with step 1 in their replies)

After a friend tested this he said he was able to uninstall his then reinstall it so I did mine, it did reinstall but no change; still won't launch through any of the icons, will through MO (crash's though) so that step is finished.

Maybe Steam has made a change in one of their recent (less than 2 weeks) updates, really frustrating, especially when I can't contact Steam Support to tell them about this. Steam Support (regarding the Creation Kit) leads to a blank page saying they're sorry, but they offer nothing beyond that.

  • 1 year later...

Well hello there, this is my first time replying in a forum thread but I think this may be helpful to future people, In my case this was happening because I installed Creation Kit, under a different drives than the one I have Skyrim installed, so if this is your case, just make sure to install the creation kit in the same drive as the game, because for some reason it needs a Steam api dll.

Hope you guys have a nice [Insert time of day here]!
